C of A - Military - World War II
Interesting bundle of POW postcards (mostly) and lettersheets mostly to Germany and including a few items posted after the war ended including an April 1947 item from Loveday (South Australia), mostly good to fine. (31)
1941 postcards for POW use comprising two different types "I am quite well..." with completely different versions of the German text (both with minor blemishes) & "I have received a parcel from you..." (very fine), all unused and rare thus. (3)
1944 usages of 1/- POW Lettersheets from Murchison or Barmera to Saar or Austria. Unusual regional destinations.
1944 usage to Victoria of Air Mail Letter Card with printed 'POSTAGE/1d/PAID' in red & 'AUST UNIT POSTAL STN/2MR44/351' used at from 2/11 Field PO in Western Australia, minor stain at base. [The first example we have seen used from somewhere other than Papua or Northern Territory]
1945 use of POW postcard between German POWs in Western Australia & Victoria, '.../No 16 PW Camp Marrinup WA' cachet on the face. Rare inter-camp usage.
1945 (Sep) local usage of POW Postal Card pre-stamped with 'MURCHISON PW GROUP' h/s on reverse but posted TO a German officer at the Camp from a POW at "Graytown near Nagambie" (site of a small woodcutting camp). Rare local usage.
1946 (Dec) very late usage of 6d POW Postal Card to Germany apparently pre-stamped with '13 POW GROUP MURCHISON' h/s on reverse as it was posted at sea - endorsed "Schiff Orontes" alongside pronted 'Camp' - with 'PASSE FREE/OF POSTAGE' h/s, filing-holes at left, a few blemishes & the writing has faded. A remarkable post-war usage. [With letter from Phil Collas speculating the Orontes was used to return repatriated POWs to Germany]
1941 local cover with 2½d on 2d Map and 'FIJI BOMBER FUND' label at upper-right, minor blemishes.
c.1943 3a Airgraph form, folded but otherwise very fine unused. [After use by troops, the forms were microfilmed and then destroyed, so no used example should exist]
Netherlands Indies: WWII usage of a Dutch 'VELDPOST' postcard from a Japanese soldier (?) presumably to Japan, stained & a little reduced at left.
