QUEENSLAND - Postal History
1911 cover to "Harbin Manchuria" addressed partly in Russian with 1d only tied by 'BENARKIN' cds, good strike of the scarce '30/CTMS/T' h/s, 'NAGASAKI/JAPAN' transit & Cyrillic Harbin arrival b/s, opened a little roughly at left. Terrific destination. Ex Hugh Campbell & illustrated at page 116 of his "Queensland Postal History".
SOUTH AUSTRALIA - Postal History
Interesting lot including 1867 with '19' cancel & 'GLENELG' cds, 1908 to Paris with 1d & 2d tied by 'PINE CREEK SA' (Northern Territory) cds, 1910 SA Railways mourning cover with 2d perf 'SA', 1911 PPC with 1d perf 'SA', PPC endorsed "This card was/found on/the road", etc, condition variable; also a useful group of Postal Cards & Reply Cards including some with printed advices on the reverse, one with oval McCulloch & Co d/s on the face, and a few Official issues. Selection of 1920s large red registration labels including from 'ALBERTON', 'BALAKLAVA', 'CLARE', 'JAMESTOWN', 'RUNDLE ST', 'Murray Bridge', 'Peterborough' etc. A very scarce group. (Qty 15)
1859 outer to England "pBenares" with Rouletted 6d slate-blue tied by very fine 'PAID/ADELAIDE SA' cds in blue, minor blemishes.
1870 (Aug 2) cover to Adelaide with scarce franking of Perf 10xRoulette 2d orange-red SG 157 tied by 'CLARE' cds, scarce 'P - O/ 2 /AU 3/70/RAILWAY' transit b/s, repaired flap.
1877 (Aug 2) cover to Ireland with 2d orange-red Perf 10 strip of three (wing-margin at left, a couple of small faults) cancelled by light 'KOORINGA' cds, very fine 'RAILWAY/ 4 /OC/2/77/S.A.' transit & Newry arrival b/s, repaired flap.
1903 commercial double-rate cover to the United States with 2d violet plus Thin 'POSTAGE' 3d x2 tied by 'RUNDLE STREET/SA' squared-circles, curved 'REGISTERED/No ' h/s. An unusually fine & attractive "Long Tom" cover. [The addressee is given as "Geo Lathrop Pack" who we speculated was the father of renowned philatelist Charles Lathrop Pack. An internet search revealed that Pack Snr was in fact George but that his middle name was Willis. However, a George Lathrop Pack was revealed as a president of the American Forestry Association while CLP's biography revealed his presidency of the same body. As they say in the classics, "The thick plottens"!]

Remainders from an important collection/accumulation mostly pre-stamp or unstamped items with a good array of datestamps and other postal markings. Noted two 1843 items to England, 1858 with unframed-oval 'OMEO' b/s, 1848 with unusually fine framed-oval 'PORT FAIRY' b/s, 1854 OHMS with Butterfly '14' in red, 1862 with 1/- Octagonal tied by superb BN '40' with equally fine oval 'ECHUCA' b/s, 1868 to England with 10d Laureate & 'M' h/s in red etc, condition variable. Wide-ranging group with no junk including 1855 stampless entire to France with very fine boxed 'COLONIES/&c ART 13' h/s, 1858 cover to England with Half-Lengths 3d pair (the lower unit is superb), 1858 to Ireland with Emblems Imperf 1d x2 & 4d, Laureates five covers with various 1d printings & including a superb little cover to Tasmania with 1d & DLR 2d and an 1874 bankbook envelope with solo franking, Laureate 3d orange cancelled on arrival at Hobart, 1883 cover with Government House embossing on the flap carried by diplomatic bag & posted in London, 1866 registration receipt, taxed and official mail, several attractive advertising covers etc, condition a bit mixed. 1850 large-part outer to Port Fairy with Half-Length 2d SG 6 (3 margins, minor blemishes), Butterfly '1' cancel & 'MELBOURNE/PORT PHILLIP' b/s, vertical fold & minor soiling.
1857 cover to Melbourne (b/s) with Queen-on-Throne 1d x2 singles & a pair with poor BN '5' cancels of 'BALLARAT' (oval b/s), small faults. Ex Sir Chester Beatty.

1859 registered front to Switzerland via France with remarkable franking of Queen on Throne 6d x5 tied by indistinct numeral cancels.
1863 small cover to England with Perf 12 1/- Octagonal tied by Geelong duplex, unusually fine strike of the 'M' h/s in red signifying routing "via Marseilles" (endorsed at top).
1865 cover to "On der den dam/Netherland" endorsed "via Marseilles" with 1/- Laureate tied by poor BN of 'DUNOLLY' (b/s), light strike of French marine sorter cds in red, very fine 'ONDERDENDAM' arrival b/s in red, flap torn. Scarce destination.
1869-70 covers (2) & a front with Laureate frankings including 1869 with fine BN '279' & 'BRIGHT' cds (early usage: renamed from Morse's Creek in 1866), and 1870 to England with recut BN '247' (rated R) & 'ROSEDALE' b/s.
1872 cover to England "via Brindisi" with 'NINEPENCE' on 10d brown/pink SG 171 tied by 'WARRNAMBOOL/OC9/72/VICTORIA - 10' duplex.
1874 cover to "Dr Julia Lore/American Mission/Moradabad/NWP/India" with Laureate 1/- blue/blue tied by Melbourne duplex, b/s of 'BOMBAY', 'ALLAHABAD' & 'MOORADABAD', minor & repaired opening fault. Ex Holness. Excellent destination item. [How many female doctors had been graduated by 1874!?]
