Cape of Good Hope: Spink auction catalogue (26/5/1999) of Ad Indhusophon's Grand Prix "Postage Stamps & Postal History of the Cape of Good Hope".
SOUTH AFRICA - (Provinces)
BOER WAR: (Oct 16) illustrated advertising cover (featuring the Transvaal flag) to Cape Town with ZAR ½d (fault) tied by Johannesburg cds of 16OCT99, complete 'V [crown] R/OPENED UNDER MARTIAL LAW' label entirely (and unusually) on the reverse, exceptional strikes of the boxed 'STOPPED BY CENSOR/RETURN TO SENDER' & 'Undelivered for Reason Stated/TO BE RETURNED TO ADDRESS HEREON' h/s both in violet. Despite these instructions, the cover was apparently impounded in Natal - 'RETURNED LETTER OFFICE/3 4/00/NATAL' cds on the face - & finally returned in 1901 as evidenced by the Johannesburg arrival b/s of 14JAN01. A truly stunning printed matter rate cover, posted in the first week of the Second Boer War - the Boers declared war on 11.10.1899 - and amazingly with cds of 1899 1900 & 1901!
BOER WAR: 1899 usage to United States of GB 1d Postal Card with FPO cds, message headed "Camp De Aar Dec 4 99" and states "...we probably move to the relief of Kimberley tomorrow...", underpaid but untaxed.
BOER WAR: 1900 illustrated cover with printed 'HEADQUARTERS/Young Mens Christian Association/CANADIAN CONTINGENT/ON ACTIVE SERVICE WITH BRITISH FORCES/SOUTH AFRICA' & crossed-flags at upper-left, GB 1d lilac tied by indistinct FPO cds, to Canada with very fine strike of the oval 'CANADIAN CONTINGENT/APR 18 1900/SOUTH AFRICA' d/s in magenta, Montreal arrival "flag" b/s, readdressed to "Manitoulin Island/Ont", minor soiling & light staining on the reverse. A stunning exhibition item. [Manitoulin is the world's largest freshwater island]
CAPE OF GOOD HOPE: 1880 cover to Bombay "via England" (perverse!) with 1d x2, 'THREEPENCE' on 4d rose & 6d tied by Barred Numeral '2' cancels, faint London & very fine Indian 'SEA/POST OFFICE/ C ' transit b/s.
South Africa: 1914 internal cover with KGV 2d & 3d tied by indistinct cds, superb boxed 'POSTED OUT OF COURSE/2' h/s & '4D' tax h/s, light boxed Pretoria registration h/s & oval 'REGISTERED/ PRETORIA' d/s, on arrival Transvaal 1d & 3d Postage Dues added & tied by 'NYLSTROOM' cds, a couple of pinholes. Very attractive. (Qty 2)
South African Provinces: Natal 1894 cover to Sydney (b/s) with 3d grey, 6d mauve & 1891 2½d tied by faint cds, minor repairs.
South African Provinces: Orange River Colony 1901 cover to a Boer POW on 'ST HELENA' (cds on the face) with OFS 'VRI/2d' on 2d pair & 'ORANGE/RIVER/COLONY' on CofGH ½d pair tied by 'WINBURG/ORC' cds. Most attractive.
South African Provinces: Transvaal 1901 cover to a Boer POW in Ceylon with 'ERI' 1d x5, fine b/s of the oval 'BURGHER CAMP/KRUGERSDORP' d/s in purple & 'KRUGERSDORP/PBC/AE MAINWARING' cachet in violet, readdressed on arrival to Diyatalawa in red, opened-out for display & a bit soiled.
