c.1936 Pictorials 1d "WILSON'S PROMONTORY/VICTORIA" (featuring the lighthouse) completed artwork in pencil & India ink on cartridge paper (215x259mm) affixed to thin card of the same size, endorsed "Spinnacker" at base, with a stamp-size photographic reduction affixed at lower-left, minor staining at upper-left but clear of the design. This and the next eight lots are from a series of 18 designs prepared by New Zealand's most prolific stamp designer James Berry, none of which were accepted because he wasn't an Australian! The d 6d & 7d designs from the same series sold for $2800 each at our auction of 25/1/2003.Berry actually received an invitation from the Postmaster-General's Department to contribute to a design competition for a proposed new series of pictorial stamps. His entries were not only rejected on jingoistic grounds, they were then "misplaced" for a decade! In 1947 he finally received a letter that stated "it is felt that an apology is due to you" for having been put to "so much trouble and inconvenience" and for the entries having been "overlooked". The Post Office was all heart: they returned the entries by surface mail!
