TASMANIA - Postal History
1840 entire letter (partly cross-written) headed "Ship Perfect Bass Straits/19 December 1840" to Scotland with very fine oval 'PAID SHIP LETTER/SYDNEY' d/s in red, rated "3" in red & "8" in black, unusually with 'INDIA LETTER/PLYMOUTH' b/s & odd 'JUN/C 4 A/1841' arrival b/s in red, a little soiled. [Writer details the route from "Rio Janeiro" [sic], Tristan da Cunha (!!), Cape Town, St Paul's [French Southern & Antarctic Territories!!], St George's Sound [Albany, WA] & Port Philip Bay [Melbourne]. "...Port Philip appears at this time to be the magnet of attraction in this part of the world...The town of Melbourne is a wonderful place...people & money is what they want more than merchandise..." Then from Sydney 5/1/1841 "...completing our journey in half a year & two days..." and signed "John Mackensie", to his father of the same name]
Attractive selection including Imperf 1/- Octagonal (superb, but it's a Jeffryes forgery), Laureates 3d orange SG 149 **, Bell 1d stated to be SG 201, Postal Fiscals 2/6d orange, 3/- drab, 4/- red-orange & 10/- grey-green, 1885-95 1/- & 2/- (all 3), 'STAMP DUTY' Opts 1/-, 1897 Charity pair, 1900 Charity 2d (superb) etc, generally very fine with large-part o.g., Cat £1300+. Array on Hagners including Half-Lengths 1d (11), 2d (8, including pair), 3d (11, two perforated), Queen-on-Throne 2d imperf (13, including 3 pairs), Emblems Wmk Star 2d (pair) & 4d (13, all 4 margins including 2 pairs), Woodblocks 6d (2), 2/-, 'TOO LATE', & 'REGISTERED' (2), later issues to 5/- (5, two *), £10 Stamp Duty optd 'SPECIMEN' (perf fault), mint 1897 Charity (2 sets, plus 2½d CTO) and 1900 Charity, Postage Dues to 1/-. A serious collector's duplicates in seven small stockbooks and exercise books with annotated studies of the "Bantam" ½d green & 1½d brown/yellow, one book marked "Watermark & Other Varieties" in which we noted a 10d grey with marginal watermark 'GE', lots of Bell and Naish issues etc. Take time to appreciate. An advanced collector's duplicates in a small carton. Our necessarily superficial inspection revealed Imperfs, unusual quantities of many issues, later types to 5/- including two blocks of 4, revenues etc. We expect our estimate is VERY conservative. (Qty 1000s)
1851 Ham Half-Lengths Original State of the Dies 3d bright blue SG 4 , margins just touching (at upper-right) to large, Cat £450. Ex Purves. [This stamp sold for $1322 at our auction of 14/8/2004]

1860-66 Beaded Ovals Laid Paper 3d light blue SG 88a, perfs at top trimmed, 5mm repaired tear at upper-left that is largely clear of the design, unused. Unpriced by Gibbons. Ex Jenkins [Kellow at page 130 states "This is a very rare stamp, or which only two unused copies are known"]
1860-63 Emblems Watermark Words of Value 1d SG 98 and 2d three shades, Watermark '2' 2d four shades, a few minor blemishes, mostly unused but a couple have part o.g., Cat £1200. (Qty 8)
