C/L

B

1872 mourning cover to Texas USA - an unusual destination - with DLR 2d (defective) & Laureate 1/- tied by fine 'BALLAARAT - 5' duplex, London & New York transits in red on the face, a little aged & slightly truncated at right. [The letter (repaired with archival tape), from "Robt Gibbs" to his step-son tells the addressee that his mother has died of "valvular disease of the heart" despite a doctor recommending "having blisters on her stomach" (clearly no clue!) & continues "...grief is killing me. Oh I am desolate...every object is a reminder of my lost love. I had but one companion - one loved one - she is gone & I am alone..." His pain is palpable & the letter is truly moving. There is a reference to his wife having been from Franklin Louisiana and she may have emigrated after the Civil War. US dealer Richard Frajola has advised us that more Southerners moved to Australia than to any other country bar Mexico]

B

1875 mourning cover & matching letter from London to Wiltshire with GB 1d only but uncancelled and clearly missent to Melbourne where a very fine strike of the boxed 'DETAINED FOR/("6D") POSTAGE' h/s applied, a bit soiled & a couple of minor defects. The cover not being claimed, it was sent to the Dead Letter Branch ('DLB' b/s in green) where it was opened to ascertain the sender, upon which it became clear the item had originated in England. The 'DETAINED...' h/s was crossed-through, a Melbourne duplex applied though the stamp remained uncancelled, & it was re-sent to 'CORSHAM' (arrival b/s) as originally addressed. A remarkable item.
