AUSTRALIA: 1881 Christmas/New Year card (109x148mm) with five small vignette illustrations, romantic verse by Miss C McKay & artist's name 'CH HUNT' at the base, printed 'PRIZE DESIGNS/JOHN/ SANDS/COPYRIGHT' on the reverse where endorsed "For George/with Aunt's Love/1881", a couple of insignificant edge blemishes & minor toning on the reverse not affecting the very fine facial appearance. Rare, and very early Australian example of the multi-coloured chromo-lithography process, from the first series of Christmas Cards produced entirely in Australia. [Sydney printers John Sands & Co imported the equipment necessary for the specific purpose of printing Christmas cards. They conducted a local design competition & published 38 designs in October 1881. Three of the designs were adapted for Australia's 1982 Christmas stamps]

NEW GUINEA: c.1915 "Similar medicine being served out to the Germans who flogged the Rev Mr Cox", minor soiling, unused. [Just before the Australian troops arrived in German New Guinea, a group of Germans flogged the Methodist missionary Rev WA Cox. The Australians took the perpetrators to Rabaul & administered "eye-for-an-eye" floggings, in the presence of the German residents who were required to attend. Photography was banned but an enterprising American sailor took this snap, which he later sold to the German Consul at Soerabaja. The incident is included in Vol X of "The Official History of Australia in the War" (1927)]
