1850-51 Sydney Views Plate IV Stout Yellowish Vertically Laid Paper 2d ultramarine SG 34 block of 4, margins close to just shaved, minor staining, four light strikes of the Reversed Barred Numeral '6' of St Mary's, Cat 680++++. Ex Victor Frankenstein.

A great rarity, this block is considered by some to be one of the highlights of the Frankenstein Collection. (In the catalogue for that sale, the block was erroneously described as being "rebacked", which it is not.) Multiples of the Laid Paper stamps are extremely scarce, and this is probably the largest recorded multiple. There were no multiples in the Slade-Slade, Wiggins, "Espana", White or Rivett-Carnac Collections. Judge Hamilton (1958) had a pair in ultramarine, Dale-Lichtenstein had an unused pair, the "Manwood" Collection included a horizontal strip of 3 in the Prussian blue shade SG 35, and Frankenstein had a pair in Prussian blue (wrongly described as ultramarine).

1888-89 Centennial 20/- Governors Carrington & Phillip imperforate proof block of 4 in dull violet on ungummed unwatermarked paper, large margins, characteristic minor blemishes. Ex Don Landers. [It seems that these proofs were produced as blocks of 4 only, and were not cut from larger blocks or sheets. Each block of 4 should therefore be "unique". Two similar 20/- proof blocks sold for $1150 & $1322 respectively in our auction of 29/11/2008]

1905-11 Crown/A-in-Circle 20/- Governors Carrington & Phillip Perf 12x11 BW #N74 (SG 350ba) marginal block of 6 (3x2) from the left of the sheet with part-imprint 'FIFTY POU[NDS PER SHEET OF FIFTY]', well centred, the upper units lightly mounted, the lower units unmounted, Cat $1800++ (1140++) for six mounted singles. A marvellous block, which is possibly the largest surviving multiple in private hands.

A previous owner commented "If this was a block of six One Pound Roos, it would be worth $20,000." Actually, it would be worth more like $50,000 which highlights how relatively undervalued the pre-1913 High Values are.
