COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA
1930 entire makeshift parcel label (200x170mm) still affixed to a slightly larger piece from a linen bag to Switzerland with an amazing seven-colours franking comprising Roos 6d brown, 1/- x2 & 2/- maroon vetical pair (the upper-unit Chopped Neck BW #39d) + KGV ½d orange, 1d green, 'TWO/PENCE' on 1½d red & 3d blue all tied by 'PARCEL POST/ROCKHAMPTON' cds, noted as weighing 150oz or "11 lbs avoid", insured for £50 with a green/white 'INSURED PARCEL' label (not previously seen by us), on arrival two Swiss labels added, some minor blemishes but remarkably fine for such an item. Truly astonishing! With a letter from Richard Breckon confirming the postage of 5/4d for a parcel weighing between 8 & 11 pounds (represented by the stamps at upper-right), plus 1/8½d - the stamps at lower-right - for insurance cover between £48 & £50. Also with the relevant extracts from the 1930 "Post Office Guide". The bag probably contained sapphires as it is from one of the prominent gemstone miners at "Sapphire via Anakie" in central Queensland. Other towns in the vicinity are Emerald & Rubyvale.
COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - Other Pre-Decimal Frankings
POSTAL CARDS: 1906 Fourth Scenic Issue with 'POST CARD' Heading 1d claret HG 15 "Botanic Gardens, Brisbane" (lawntennis court, players & ancient racquets), printed advice for Joint Stock Bank amended to Bank of Commerce, used in 1909 with 'CLIFTON' cds in blue, minor blemishes. [The later issues are grossly underrated. A measure of their scarcity is that Higgins & Gage give the issue date as 1908, two years after they actually appeared]
GILBERT & ELLICE ISLANDS
FANNING ISLAND: 1943 (June 3) Commonwealth Bank of Australia printed registered letter envelope to Sydney with 2d & 3d paying the correct rate & boxed registration h/s, 'COMMTH SAV/BANK/FANNING ISLAND' cachet in violet at L/L, US transit b/s 'HONOLULU, HAWAII/JUN/10/...', 'NEW YORK NY/JUN/ 12/1943/NAVY 10047 BR', 'U.S./JUN/13/1943/NAVY' & 'U.S. NAVY 135/JUN/23/1943/REGISTERED' transit backstamps, minor blemishes. A remarkable wartime item. [The CBA's official history notes that Fanning was the Bank's most distant outpost & the only one that operated in a war zone]
PAPUA - 1901-1942 The BNG & Papua Stamps Period
1910 Union Bank of Australia cover from Melbourne to the Port Moresby branch with untied Victoria 3d orange-brown, fine 'PORT MORESBY/28 OCT 10/PAPUA' b/s overlapping Sydney transit cds.
