1879 (April 15) cover to Ireland with Laureates 6d tied by fine Echuca duplex with a superb 'J MAULTBY/[paddlesteamer]/HERO' cachet in magenta at upper-left, Melbourne & Irish 'CORK/TPO' transit b/s, minor blemishes. [Our vendor has identified four similar covers all to Maultby Snr in Ireland. [The "Hero" was built in 1874 by George Linklater & Maultby Jnr was its first captain. The boat worked the river until 1957 when she caught fire & sank. Raised in 1988, "Hero" has been fully restored & again operates out of Echuca]

[This h/s was intended to be applied to mail posted in the wrong chute outside the GPO, or registered mail posted in a pillar box. It's usage on an unaddressed item is highly irregular]
