PAPUA - 1901-1942 The BNG & Papua Stamps Period

833

C

A

1904 PPC ("Native of Cape Nelson") to England with BNG 1d only & very fine 'SAMARAI/BNG' cds, manuscript "T1d" in red & superb strike of the rare '5/CTMS/T' h/s applied in error, superb '1D/F.B./G.' h/s applied at London. [The generic tax handstamps are unlisted by Lee. They were issued to all major Queensland post offices - including Port Moresby & Samarai - for use on underpaid mail to foreign countries. Very few such markings, of which this may be the earliest, have been recorded from Papua. The clerk made two mistakes: 1) taxing the deficiency only d (5c) instead of 1d (10c); and 2) using the handstamp on mail to England]

POSTAL CARDS: c.1917 1d issue with the BNG stamp totally obliterated with a printed oblong in black, faults but believed to be the only recorded unused example. [This item was sold for $484 at the Macray Watson sale of 5/2/1991. It is believed to be a trial for official Postal Cards that was not proceeded with. However, a used example with a 1d perf 'OS' affixed across the obliteration is known: see the enclosed 1987 article by Gary Watson]
