This British Commonwealth lot includes an excellent group of KGV-KGVI African commercial airmails (some with unusual instructional handstamps), with unusual destinations including Rhodes! (sadly defective), Fiji & Hong Kong; Straits Settlements lovely advertising cover; a few handy Middle East items; HMAS "Hermes" group (sunk during WWII); Fiji 1940 commercial usage of KGV 2d+3d size H2 Registration Envelope; etc, condition a bit mixed but an excellent lot. A "freshening up" from a leading Postal History dealer the foreign section from this dealer's "freshening up" with useful Indonesia including items from Bali Lombok & Dutch New Guinea; France 1809 entire from 'CONDOM' (yes, a genuine French letter!); Thai Postal Cards including a couple commercially used & 1947 'AV2' cover; some postcards including an exceptional group of Esperanto types (one of 1916 from a Dutch soldier to Australia!) & 1927 Japan to Ruanda-Urundi!; illustrated covers & postcards for European hotels; condition generally fine to very fine. OFFICIAL MAIL: 1913 usage of Victorian Post Office 'UNIVERSAL POSTAL UNION/ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF RECEIPT/AVIS DE RECEPTION' Envelope with Melbourne cds & red registration label, minor blemishes. [A rare item of stampless Postal Stationery: Max Watson was never able to obtain one for his collection of Victorian Registered Mail]
1911 usage of Fullface 1d Postal Card PC1 to Belgium uprated with Victorian 1d (so overpaid ½d) with superb 'VERVIERS' arrival cds & '27'-in-circle postman's h/s. Superb! Ex Hugh Freeman.
1919 (July 24) use of Kangaroo 1d Die I ('OS'-in-the-Die) Envelope for Victorian Education Department, with rare uprating of perf Large 'OS' ½d to pay War Tax and tied by 'WATCHEM/VIC' cds.
1924 commercial usage to France of 'FOURPENCE/HALFPENNY' on 5d Registration Envelope with 1½d green tied by light 'HAY ST EAST PERTH' cds, large provisional registration label with 'HAYSTEAST' (no spaces) h/s.
1937 commercial use of 5d Registration Envelope uprated for airmail transit to Hong Kong (b/s) with 4d & 1/4d tied bt 'DARWIN N.T./AUSTRALIA' cds, 'DARWIN/SOUTH AUSTRALIA' registration label, 'WING WAH LOONG & Co/PORT DARWIN' oval h/s on reverse, minor blemishes.

1953 (c.) large-part wrapper to USA with rare franking of KGVI 2½d chocolate pair tied by weak Melbourne cds. [The rate was 3d for the first 2oz plus 2d for each additional 2oz]
1962 5d envelope registered airmail to Germany with QEII 2d, 5d Christmas & 10/- Arms added all tied by 'ADELAIDE RAIL' cds, green Customs label on reverse confirming weight (2lbs). [The 10/- Arms is very scarce on small covers - the rate was 2/3d per ½oz x4 + 2/- registration]
1970 (April 23) long 5c Envelope to Tanzania uprated with Cook 30c & 5c se-tenant strip of 5, Expo 20c and 5c Royal Visit all tied by 'LONDONDERRY/NSW AUST' cds paying 60c double-rate airmail and 25c registration, minor wrinkles. Possibly commercial!
C of A - Military - World War I
1916 usage of Gratuitous Distribution Letter Card ("A.I.F. EMBARKING" in brown on the reverse) headed "Tel-el-Kebir/Mar 10 16" to Victoria with 'MILITARY RECREATION/FREE' h/s in red & Cairo cds, minor bends. A rare item in unusually fine condition for such flimsy stock. [The writer states "...This is an enormous camp. It is over 3 miles long and contains nearly all Australians...in a few weeks time we shall be either in England or France...". See also Lot 315.
1917 (c.) POW Envelope from Holdsworthy POW Camp with 28mm '.../FREE/---' printed at upper-right, to Germany with Lt Col Holman h/s in violet & boxed 'PASSED BY/CENSOR SD' h/s in purple, endorsed "O Picker B26 Eastern Compound/Holdsworthy" on the flap, minor blemishes.
