1897 triple-rate commercial cover to New York (b/s) "per Moama SS" with three-colour franking of ½d grey, 1d carmine Die I x3 & 2d blue x2 tied by 4 strikes of the 'NZ/MARINE/PO' cds and alongside an almost very fine strike of the impressive 40mm rubber 'N.Z. MARINE P.O./4SEP97/R.M.S. MOANA' cds in rosine as is the double-boxed 'PACKET-BOAT.' h/s, superb sender's h/s 'R.A. HERVEY/ 30AUG97/...SYDNEY' in blue on the flap. Ex John Woolfe. A marvellous cover.
1854 (Feb 10) stampless entire to Scotland "pAustralian" with 'PAID/MELBOURNE/ d/s, rated "3" for outward shipletter & "1/-" wrongly instead of 8d for an inwards private shipletter, internal faults but very fine facial appearance. Ex Moreton & Brian Peace. [From the last of three voyages for the ill-fated Australian Steam Navigation Co. The ship ran aground at Cape Town. Over 3 tons of gold was transferred to a bank there but the passengers' bags were plundered]
1857 (Sept 14) cover to Glasgow "pr Emu" [sic] with Emblems 1d pair (3 good to large margins) & 4d all tied by fine strikes of BN '2' of 'GEELONG' (fine 'SE16/1857' b/s), London transit of 'DE7/57' in red on the face, same-day Glasgow arrival b/s, vertical filing crease. [The "Emeu" ran aground on a reef in the Red Sea & the mails were transferred to the "Madras". Peace records "I know of at least 20 twenty covers from this incident...". This is probably the finest example we have offered]
1863 (Jan 24) cover to Switzerland via London (cds on the face) with Three Issue franking of Netted Corners 1d pair (fault at base of the second unit), Beaded Oval 4d & Octagonal Perf 12 1/- tied by BN '25' of 'HEPBURN' (cds on reverse), superb 'PD'-in-circle in red applied at Melbourne, very fine double-circle 'SCHIFFSBUREAU No2/LUZERN' fair Locarno & undated 'FRATO' (?) backstamps, soiled. [#Switz157 in Ben Palmer's Census] Offered with no reserve.
1898-1911 'DEUTSCHE/SEEPOST/AUSTRALISCHE/HAUPTLINIE' cds on commercial PPCs (3, one a Norddeutscher Lloyd type), German 10pf Postal Card & a 1900 cover to Frankfurt (b/s) with three fair to very fine strikes of the 'f'-code cds used aboard SMS "Prinz Regent Luitpold" also with mss "T 25cts" & "40" both in blue, the latter across the remnants of another stamp, 'ADEN' transit b/s; also a PPC with '.../OST-/ASIATISCHE/HAUPTLINIE' cancel & 'PENANG' cds; minor blemishes. 1902 Goudin, Coutanceau & Co (superb firm's d/s on the reverse) commercial cover to Portugal with scarce franking of 1c x3, 'ONE CENT' on 2c pair, 2c & 8c paying the 15c rate, very fine 'LA REUNION A MARSEILLE/LV No 4' French marine sorter d/s on the face, Oporto arrival b/s. [In 1902, Goudin, Coutanceau & Co sold the island's electricity generator to Fanucci, Adam & Co]

1902 commercial triple-rate cover to Germany (b/s) "via Sydney per D Tanglin" with Germania 10pf x4 tied by very fine 'MATUPI' cds, imperforate registration label (Einfeldt #1; faults), flap & large red wax seal largely removed but the sender's endorsement "Abs Johs Schmidt/Matupi Bismarck Ar[...]" remains, vertical fold & minor soiling/toning.
1904 Dutch PPC ("Groet uit Banda") to Sydney with German 10pf tied by light but obvious 'DEUTSCHE SEEPOST/NEU/GUINEA/ZWEIGLINIE/(SINGAPORE)/28 10/04 b' cds, minor blemishes. Cockrill & Gottspenn state "Very rare cancellation".
