1854 (Nov 13) part-entire to England endorsed "Overland via Southampton" & signed "George Walpole Leake" with "Penny Black" x2 horizontal pairs (one very fine, the other with a couple of faults) paying the 4d shipletter rate to anywhere in the world, early usages of the Void Grid cancel & 'PERTH/ 13NO13/1854' Maltese Cross d/s, professionally repaired at right. A very attractive "Number One" cover. Ex Gundacker.

The "Penny Black" was issued 1/8/1854, and 1854 frankings are thus both very scarce and most desirable. Leake was one of the most prominent settlers. He arrived at the Swan in 1829; was the first magistrate appointed; a founding director of the Bank of Western Australia; an original nominated member of the Legislative Council; etc etc.
