TASMANIA - Postal History
1852 entire signed "HDowling" to the Cape of Good hope rated "4" in red & endorsed "paid" with 'LAUNCESTON/4NO4/1852' cds, tiny temperance tract affixed across the flap (sadly damaged on opening), untidy inwards rate marking, some internal reinforcing/repairs. An unusual destination in this period. [Henry Dowling was a Baptist minister at Launceston & an ardent advocate of teetotalism. His youngest son, also Henry, founded in 1834 the Launceston Bank for Savings]

1951 (June) Qantas return flight Cocos-Australia AAMC #1273c (through to United States) with Crocodile 2/- cancelled on arrival at Sydney, superb strike of the double-circle 'C.& W.LTD/11JUN51/ COCOS' cds ties type-written 'PER QANTAS/CATALINA/VH-EBA' label to the reverse, makeshift rouletted airmail label 'R COCOS/0019' on the face. [20 covers were prepared by ER Leigh-Parkin, who also created the labels & "lightning flash" cachet on the face & applied his personal seal to wax on the flap. Kim Dwyer's similar cover - opened-out for display - sold for $3450 at our auction of 24/6/2006]
"CINDERELLAS": 1887 Cake Fair 6d carmine/yellow imperforate, small suface abrasion otherwise very fine unused. Gorgeous!

ROCKET MAIL: 1934 (Dec 17) with 'SEMAPHORE/STATION/SAUGOR ISLAND/...' d/s & 'BY ROCKET MAIL' h/s both in purple, red 'Shore to ship/By Rocket!" label, signed "WShenton", minor blemishes.
