1870-1871 Fiji Times Express Quadrillé Paper 1d SG 1 with full printer's rules & 3d SG 2 with printer's rules at left & base tied to small pieces by 'SUVA/DE21/1870/=FIJI=' or 'SUVA/DE4/ 1870/=FIJI=' cds, Cat £7500. ÞÞOn the face of it, both stamps are genuinely used with contemporary datestamps. However, they are of a type not recorded. Interestingly, they are different, the 'S' and the dateslugs being of different sizes! Both illustrated by Rodger & Duberal facing p21 where described as "forged cancellations on genuine stamps". But one has to ask why would anyone do this to valuable unused stamps??? It is generally accepted that the PO at Suva opened in December 1871 but...??? These stamps were 'discovered" in 1961 and it appears that no other examples are known. Punters required!
