1915 double-rate commercial cover to Drysdale with Kangaroos 2d corner pair (probably First Wmk) paying 1d x2 + 3d registration & tied by 'MILITARY CAMP/23AU15/BALLARAT' cds (ERD), registration number in lieu of label, Ballarat transit b/s, minor flap fault. Rare: this is the only registered cover we have seen from any Victorian Military Camp other than Broadmeadows. [PO 11/8/1915; closed 4/12/1916]

1942 commercial airmail cover to Sydney with 3d brown x2 & straight-line 'HMAS MELVILLE' cancel, a second very fine strike on the provisional registration label plus two more across the flap where also endorsed by the sender "EC JOHNSON/HMAS PLATYPUS", 'ARMY POST OFFICE/3JY44/065' (used at Darwin) transit & Sydney arrival b/s, tombstone naval censor h/s in violet. Use of ships' names was highly irregular & contrary to military postal regulations. ["Platypus" was in Darwin Harbour when the Japanese bombed Darwin on 19/2/1942. She remained in Darwin as a training ship & later as a base ship. HMAS "Melville" was the naval shore station at Darwin]

1856-59 'REGISTERED' (6d) orange-red & indigo being the 1888 reprint on hard yellowish paper, lower-left corner pair, margins good to enormous. RPSofL Certificate (2008). [It was a bad day for the Royal. They got the blue shade wrong, and noted thinning that we cannot see: this coarse paper exhibits some natural areas that are thinner than elsewhere, but the paper has not been damaged]

1860 (Nov 22) entire to Switzerland with scarce franking of Octagonal 1/- Perf 12 single & pair plus Queen-on-Throne Rouletted 6d, poor BN '25' of 'HEPBURN' (poor oval b/s), endorsed "Registered" on the face & signed by the sender "Giuseppe Strozzi" on the flap as required by the regulations, very fine 'REGISTERED/MELBOURNE' transit cds in red on the face plus British '[crown]/REGISTERED' h/s, 'LONDON/REGISTERED' d/s & 'PD'-in-oval all in red on the face, various French & Swiss transits including very fine boxed rate-calculation handstamp, some internal reinforcing. An attractive & very "busy" cover.

1895 usage of 3d Registration Envelope to the Telegraph Office in Berlin (b/s) with d pink x2, 1d orange & 2d violet x2 tied by untidy Melbourne cancels, bold strike of the rare 'OFFICIALLY REGISTERED/AT G.P.O.' handstamp at left, minor blemishes & opened-out for display. [This marking was absent from both Max Watson's "Registered Mail of Victoria" & Hugh Freeman's extraordinary collection of instructional handstamps. United Kingdom collectors have confirmed that it is not a London marking]

ANDAMAN ISLANDS: 1913 commercial usage to England of Indian KGV a+2a Registration Envelope size F with KEVII a tied by fine 'PORT-BLAIR/12JL13' cds (as Proud #D11 but 2-digit month), small 'PORT BLAIR' h/s on registration label (on the reverse), opened-out for display, a couple of minor blemishes. [This is 2 years earlier than Proud's ERD for this type of cds. He records a 'REG' cds only from 1930. Port Blair was established in 1858 as a convict settlement for reception of prisoners from the Indian mainland. From 1909 many political prisoners were held here]
