[William Frazer's single sold for £978 (2003). The Handbook at page 435 states "One block of sixty stamps in carmine had the surcharge double"]
1903 Overprints on New Zealand Birds 3d (hinge remainder) to 1/- SG 13-16a including the 1/- 'Tahae Sileni' Error SG 15 (egregious centring), lightly mounted, Cat £745. RPSofL Certificate (1980) for the 'Tahae Sileni. In the native language "Taha e Sileni" = One Shilling. However, by omitting the space between the 'a' and 'e', the typesetter created an overprint that translates as "Thief Shilling"!! The Handbook at page 438 states that the first 20 sheets in a "distinctive colour, brown-red" were affected. All were withdrawn but 96 stamps had already been sold. The New Zealand Handbook and Gibbons both fail to note that the watermark is Inverted & Reversed. We are of the opinion that this stamp is significantly undervalued because people focus on the fact that 1200 were printed, rather than that only 96 were sold. As such, it is a very scarce stamp.
