1853 cover to Newcastle with a superb example of the Laureates Plate 3 2d Prussian blue struck with light BN '64' of 'WEST MAITLAND' (crowned-oval b/s), arrival d/s of OC*7 on the face, endorsed "Unclaimed" in red & with another strike of the Newcastle d/s of NO*8, sent to the DLO with Sydney b/s of NO*9 and the unusual 'ADVERTISED/UNCLAIMED.' h/s (with the lower line tilted backwards). 1892 OHMS cover front with Surveyor-General's office imprint at lower-left & endorsed "Lithos" at upper-left, to Melbourne with rare franking of Second Sidefaces 4d yellow pair & 1/- violet pair tied by the scarce 'PARCELS POST/BRISBANE' cds, two water-affected strikes of the rare 'THIS PARCEL HAVING BEEN/PREPAID, NO FEES ARE TO BE/PAID ON DELIVERY' h/s in violet, a few faults. A remarkable item, apparently used as an address label on a packet of lithographic prints to a firm of stock & station agents. The h/s is not recorded by Campbell & has not previously been seen by us.

1895 (Oct 31) cover to "Tattersalls/The Telegraph Chambers/Brisbane" with NSW 2d Emu from 'WARIALDA' endorsed "Off/Reg" (= Officially Registered) & "3d Regn/3d Fine/6d to pay", NSW TPO & Tamworth transit & Brisbane arrival b/s. [The Tattersalls sweepstakes business operated from Brisbane for only a short time in the 1890s before being enticed by the Tasmanian Goverment to relocate to Hobart. Tatts covers from the brief Brisbane period are rare & much sought-after. Similar covers sold for $719 & $414 at our auctions of 14/8/2010 & 10/12/2010 respectively]

1868 cover from London "Via Panama" with 1d Plate '109' & 9d Plate '4' tied by 'NW/8' cancels & 'LISSON GROVE/ NW' b/s, superb 'REGISTERED/NWDO' cds in red, 'REGISTERED'-in-oval b/s of Melbourne where superb '("6d")/MORE TO PAY' h/s applied, very fine 'HEPBURN' transit b/s & almost fine strike of the rare 21mm 'DRY DIGGINGS/AU29/68/VICTORIA' cds (the only recorded example) on the face, some soiling. A remarkable via-Panama cover per "Neva" departed Southampton 2/7/1868; & "Kaikoura" arrived Sydney 23/8/1868 & Melbourne 28/8/1868. Dry Diggings PO 23/11/1863; renamed Mount Franklin 13/6/1921. Ex Rod Moreton. [Goldmining. 7km north of Daylesford. Victoria did not pay a subsidy towards the route between Sydney & Panama. NSW charged Victoria 6d for each letter on-forwarded from the via Panama service]

1870 (Nov 8) cover to Ireland endorsed "Via Marseilles" but sent via Brindisi because of the Franco-Prussian War, 10d tied by Melbourne duplex, largely very fine strike of the rare boxed 'INSUFFICIENTLY PAID/FOR BRINDISI ROUTE/DEFICIENT POSTAGE - 3d' h/s, 'DUNDRUM/DE2(?)/70/DUBLIN' arrival b/s, stained on the reverse. Carried per "Malta" which departed Melbourne 8/11/1870; from Galle per "Delhi"; from Alexandria per "Bangalore"; arrived Brindisi 21/12/1870. The through mail arrived at Southampton 1/1/1871.
