ENVELOPES: 1924 KGV "Star" 'THREE/HALFPENCE' on 2d orange with 'POSTAGE' ASC E13, flap fault that in no way detracts from the very fine appearance of this great rarity, 'OAKLEIGH/530P 22MY24/VIC' cds, grossly undercatalogued at $1500. Ex Charlie Fawcett, Julie Resch, John Sinfield & Kevin Nelson: acquired for $8960 at our auction of 20/11/2004. [Only one other example has been recorded. The Victorian Philatelic Record Feb 1924 stated only 6 examples were issued!! For two of the 6 to survive is a philatelic miracle!]
SOUTH AUSTRALIA - Postal History
GILBERT & ELLICE ISLANDS
1908 (July 4) use of US 2c Envelope (3c stamp lost) with typed "Per SS Aeon", from San Francisco to Sydney where endorsed on the flap "Damaged in wreck/of SS Aeon", one flap missing & some immersion faults but quite attractive. Rare: only one other example with manuscript endorsement recorded. Ex Robin Gwynn: illustrated by Gwynn & Hoggarth at page135. [On 18/7/1908, the "Aeon" was wrecked off the then uninhabited Christmas Island. The 56 passengers & crew were marooned there for more than two months. The ship's officers reached Fanning in an improvised vessel & the entire company was rescued by the "Manuka" on 22/9/1908]
FLIGHT COVERS: 1931 (Mar 30) Norfolk Island-NSW AAMC #184 being 'TWO/PENCE' on 1½d Envelope with 'NORFOLK ISLAND' cds at upper-left, 'LORD HOWE_ ISLAND' cds at lower-left & 3-line flight cachet autographed by the pilot "DFrancis Chichester" & numbered "27", Cat $950. Superb! [Stephen Bradford's similar item sold for $1035 at our auction of 9/11/2002]
