[On 18/7/1908, the "Aeon" was wrecked off the then uninhabited Christmas Island. The 56 passengers & crew were marooned there for more than two months. The ship's officers reached Fanning in an improvised vessel & the entire company was rescued by the "Manuka" on 22/9/1908]

1932 Greymouth Provisional 'FOURPENCE.' handstamp in blue across 1d Admiral vertical pair, no gum. [Also in 1931 the cost of registration envelopes increased from 4d to 6d. Existing stocks of 4d REs were uprated with a single 2d or a 1d pair. In 1932 the rate reverted to 4d & remaining uprated stock was revalued using the handstamp. Samuel at page 16 illustrates a similar vertical pair on a 4d RE with the embossed stamp also "revalued" with the 'FOURPENCE.' h/s. Perversely, because stamps so treated were applied only to postal, they are not catalogued by CP]
