1946 1d (4 Potatoes) red marginal vertical strip of 3 from the right of the sheet, the lower unit with a straight-edge at base, unmounted. [Designed by Allan Crawford, who served as the island's meteorologist and welfare officer is revered for his role in canvassing the British Government for resettlement of the island following the 1961 volcanic eruption]
Penfriend correspondence from Jane Lavarello to England including 1933 without cachet endorsed "Tristan da Cunha" taxed with 1d & ½d Dues added, 1935 with Cachet V in turquoise-blue, 1936-37(?) with King Edward VIII 1½d tied by smudged twin strikes of Cachet VI (?) in blue, 1937 with KGVI 1½d x2 tied by dumb cancels in black & Cachet VI in violet, 1938-39 covers x3 with Cachet VI in violet, black or dark blue each taxed with 1½d in dues added, 1948 with Cachet VIII in violet, 1949 & 1950 covers both with Cachet IX, Capetown paquebot cds & taxed (no dues added), 1950 & 1951 covers both with Cachet X and taxed (no dues added), 1951 with Cachet X & GB Festival of Britain 2½d tied by Capetown paquebot cds, 1955-61 covers x3 with QEII 3d Boat, 3d Crawfish or 2½c Crawfish, 1963 FDI covers x2 each with Resettlement 1/6d, most with original correspondence which give a fascinating insight into island life; also two unaddresed covers each with an uncancelled 1d (4 Potatoes) Local and cachet facsimiles alongside. Jane Lavarello (née Glass) was born on Tristan in 1876 and was the great granddaughter of Corporal William Glass one of the founders of the settlement. She married an Italian sailor Gaetano Lavarello, who settled on the island after being shipwrecked there in 1892. (Qty 19)
