DOCUMENTS & EPHEMERA
CHINA: Illustrated French newspapers "Journal des Voyages" 17 editions (1883-85), "Le Monde Illustré" (1862 & 1900) and "Le Petit Parsienne" (1904) with lots of fascinating social commentary - yes, in French! - including a great deal of anti-Chinese material, illustrations including various forms of torture, public beheadings (colour) etc, also a marvellous coloured cartoon of the Heads of Europe carving up a pizza inscribed 'CHINE', condition variable but quite reasonable for newsprint up to 150 years old; also a large & very detailed wall-map 'MAP OF SHANGHAI' published by North China Daily News in 1918, folded, some minor splitting.
NEW GUINEA: 1744 "A Map of the Discoveries made by Captn Willm Dampier in the/Roebuck in 1699" (350x230mm) comprising Timor, the Moluccas, the far west of New Guinea inscribed 'TERRA DE PAPOS', the northern coast of New Guinea, a badly distorted "Nova Britannia", a little aged but most attractive, mounted & attractively framed. [Text at the base of the map states "...This discovery of Captain Dampier that the country he named New Britain was an island is of very great importance..."]
