C of A KANGAROOS - CofA Watermark
10/- grey & pink with Type C 'SPECIMEN' Overprint with Shaved 'P' BW #50xd, quite lightly mounted, Cat $750.
FIRST WATERMARK: 10/- (exceptional centring), £1 and £2 (minor wrinkles) with 'Specimen' handstamp Type A, as well centred a set as we have seen, Cat $1725 (£900). Advertised retail $1975 +50% for centring.
THIRD WATERMARK: 10/- grey & deep "aniline" pink Type B BW #48x, unmounted, Cat $600. Advertised retail $750.
THIRD WATERMARK: 10/- grey & pink Type C BW #48xb, a few nibbled perfs and minor diagonal crease at lower-right, Cat $2500. Advertised retail POR. [Only 360 - three sheets, or six panes - were printed, of which 12 were Type C1 and 48 were Type C1a]
THIRD WATERMARK: 10/- grey & pink Type C1 - Shaved 'S' and Hooked 'C' - BW #48xd from the lower-left of the pane with lower and left-hand marginal watermark lines, lightly mounted, Cat $4500. Advertised retail POR. A rare stamp, of which only 12 examples can exist. [Type C1 occurs only once on the forme of 30, at positions 25 & 55 in the pane of 60, being the first unit on the fifth & tenth rows: see the ACSC at pages 2/13-14. This is the first example that we have offered]
THIRD WATERMARK: 10/- grey & pink Type C1a - Hooked 'C' only - BW #48xe from the left of the pane with left-hand marginal watermark line, rough perforations cleaned-out, lightly mounted, Cat $3500. Advertised retail POR. [Type C1a occurs on each unit in the first column of each pane: see the ACSC at pages 2/13-14]
THIRD WATERMARK: 10/- grey & pink Type C with Shaved 'P' BW #48xf, very lightly mounted, Cat $3500. The catalogue numbering of the sub-types is truly perverse. The Hooked 'C' occurs 5 times in each forme of 30 and should be designated Type C(a). The last of these units - & - also has the Shaved 'S' and, as a sub-type of Type C(a), should therefore be designated Type C(aa). The Shaved 'P' - which also occurs 5 times in the forme of 30 - should be designated Type C(b). The catalogue listing then needs to be re-ordered to be consistent with this situation. NB: These comments, of course, apply also to the Type C overprints on the Third Watermark £1 grey and £2, the Small Multiple Watermark 10/- and the CofA Watermark 10/-.
THIRD WATERMARK: £1 brown & blue Type B BW #52x, well centred, rough perforations cleaned-out, lightly mounted, Cat $675. Advertised retail $750 +50% for centring.
THIRD WATERMARK: £1 grey Type B BW #53x from the upper-right of the pane with top & right-hand marginal watermark lines, very well centred, rough perforations cleaned-out, unmounted, Cat $6000. Advertised retail POR. Surely one of the finest examples extant. [This is a notoriously difficult stamp to obtain well centred. Vastly superior to the ugly unmounted example that sold for $3910 at a Melbourne auction in August 2011]
THIRD WATERMARK: £1 grey Type C & Type D BW #53xa & xf, the latter with hinge remainder, Cat $325. Advertised retail $325.
THIRD WATERMARK: £1 grey Type C1 - Shaved 'S' and Hooked 'C' - BW #53xc from the lower-left of the pane with lower and left-hand marginal watermark lines, unlisted large coloured flaw at upper-right, very lightly mounted, Cat $1250. Advertised retail POR. [An unmounted example sold for $3450 at our auction of 22/4/2006]
THIRD WATERMARK: £1 grey Type C1a - Hooked 'C' only - BW #53xd, very lightly mounted, Cat $300. Advertised retail $325.
THIRD WATERMARK: £1 grey Type C with Shaved 'P' BW #53xe, well centred, unmounted, Cat $300 (mounted).
