C

A-

1854 entire letter - without cover - headed "Myall Creek 9th August 1854" and signed "R Hetherington" in which he relates the difficulties of reaching Gladstone by land "...I am told we are just now 200 miles from Gladstone...I shall be there in 18 days"; also a letter headed "Brisbane 9th June 1856" & similarly signed. [Richard Hetherington was Gladstone's first mayor, and postmaster from 1857. In 1870, he died while delivering mail aboard a ship when he fell into the ship's hold: a newspaper notice of his death is included. Myall Creek PO opened 1/8/1854 - so this was a VERY early letter from there - and was renamed Dalby c.1858. No Myall Creek postmarks have been recorded]

1854 envelope to "Bonshaw/Frasers Creek" [sic] endorsed "via Drayton/& Tenterfield" and also "The Postmaster at/Gayndah will please/forward to Drayton", Laureates 1d vermilion pair (faults) with lousy cancels of 'GLADSTONE/NSW' (bold b/s), poor 'GAYNDAH/NSW' b/s & fine oval 'DRAYTON/NEW.S.WALES' transit d/s on the face, also with Armidale & Tenterfield transit b/s, some soiling but quite presentable. A rare cover, with part (undated) cross-written letter within. Drayton PO renamed from Darling Downs 1848; Gayndah PO 1/1/1850; and Gladstone PO 1/7/1854. [The NSW PO at Frazer's Creek opened 1/1/1853. There was no PO at Bonshaw until 1866]
