1882 Italicised Surcharge '5/cents.' on 4c rose SG 47, exceptional centring, 'MD & Co' security h/s in blue, undated double-circle Singapore cancel, Cat £325.
1906 Overprints on Labuan 1c to $1 SG 141-151a plus the Perf 14½-15 25c SG 149a, condition a bit variable but generally fine to very fine, Cat £475. (Qty 12)

1867 (Dec 7) unstamped entire with oval 'FRIEDERICHS & Co/PENANG' cachet in blue at lower-left, to France with double-circle 'PENANG/11/DEC/1867/P.O.' cds, French 'POS.ANG.V.SUEZ/P.AN.A.MARS' mailboat cds in red, 'PARIS', 'PARIS A STRASBOURG 1o' TPO & 'REIMS' arrival b/s, rated '10' (decimes) h/s, light horizontal filing crease. Carried per "Emeu" from Singapore, "Candia" from Galle & "Ripon" from Alexandria.

1870 (April) large-part cover to London "Via Marseilles" with rare franking of Overprints on India '32 CENTS' on 2a orange SG 9 (Cat £90 x20+ on cover) tied by 'SINGAPORE - D14' duplex, London arrival b/s, the address panel excised & "renovated". Ex Howard Seltzer (Lot 3379).
1870 (June 2) entire to the United States "Via Marseilles" with 12c blue SG 15 x3 pen-cancelled "B&Co" (Boustead & Co) & tied by 'SINGAPORE - D14' duplex, London transit & small '2d' h/s indicating the (4c) credit allowed to the USA, poor Boston arrival cds. Ex Arthur White. Carried per "China" to Galle, "Simla" to Alexandria, "Syria" to Marseilles, & RMS "Serbia" from Liverpool. [A special "China" rate of 36c up to ½oz applied 1/1/1870 until 31/12/1870 only. However, it was effective in the Straits Settlements from only 10/3/1870]
1873 double-rate cover to "Col R Cadell/Royal Artillery/Madras" with 12c SG 15 x2 & poor bars cancels, 'SINGAPORE/ A /JA9/73/PAID' cds in red, three Madras b/s & redirected to 'TRICHINOPOLY' (arrival b/s affected by opening fault), overall soiling. Carried per "Travancore" to Galle.
1874 outer to "Baden/Germany" endorsed "via Triest" with 12c tied by a company's cachet in blue & poor 'PENANG - D17' duplex, 'WIEN' & 'MARKDORF' transit & 'RADOLFZELL' (in blue) arrival b/s.
1874 (May) cover to Scotland "via Brindisi" with 30c SG 17 & 24c SG 16 - paying the late fee - both pre-cancelled with Chartered Mercantile Bank cachet & tied by Circle-of-Squares "killer" (Proud #K15), 'SINGAPORE/PAID' & 'PENANG/PAID' cds both in red, superb Edinburgh arrival b/s, overall aging/soiling & opened a bit roughly. Per "China". [Letters posted after time attracted a 24c late fee, were sorted aboard ship & placed in closed bags at Penang]
1875 entire to New York "Via Brindisi", 24c single & pair with 'B & Co' h/s in blue of Boustead & Co & tied by "killer" cancels, 'SINGAPORE/PAID' cds in red, London transit & 'NEW YORK/PAID ALL' arrival b/s in red. Carried per "Golconda" to Galle, "Mirzapore" to Alexandria, "Baroda" to Brindisi, & "Oder" to New York. [The rate was 42c so the letter was 6c overpaid, the 24c at lower-left paying a late fee]
1876 cover to "Trieste/Austria" endorsed "via Brindisi" with 6c & 12c SG 13 & 15 tied by indistinct company's h/s in violet & Circle-of-Squares "killer", unusually with 'SINGAPORE/ A /UNPAID' cds in red, Brinidisi & part-Venice transit & oval 'TRIEST/9 6/76' arrival b/s. Unusual destination. Carried per "Mongolia", "Khedive" from Galle, & "Pera" from Alexandria. [The Unpaid cds was probably applied in error. However, as the "Mongolia" departed Singapore on 29th April, it may indicate that a late fee payment was due]
1877 entire written in Italian to Genoa with 2c brown & 12c blue SG 11 & 15 tied by 'GAGGINO' company's h/s in blue & poor 'B/172' cancels, 'SINGAPORE/ B/ MR8/77/PAID' cds in red, 'BRINDISI', 'GENOVA' & postman's '16' h/s on the reverse, ironed-out filing creases, a little soiled/stained. Scarce destination. Ex Tay Peng Hian (Lot 60174). Carried per "Zambesi" from Penang, "Australia" from Galle, & "Venetia" from Alexandria. [The second-last westwards sailing prior to the Straits Settlements joining the Universal Postal Union]
1878 (Aug 5) cover to France with 6d dull lilac SG 13 pair & poor 'B/172' cancel, 'PENANG/ A /AU5/78/PAID' cds in red alongside, French 'POSS ANG V BRIND/A MOD' mailboat cds in red & Paris arrival b/s, a few blemishes. Ex Dr FE Wood (part of Lot 295). Carried per "Zambesi" from Penang, & "Ceylon" from Alexandria.
1878 cover with '.../DELI/(SUMATRA)' cachet in blue across the flap, to Spain (!) "via Brindisi" with 12c tied by poor 'B/172', part 'PENANG/PAID' cds in red & superb 'GIBRALTAR' transit cds on the face, minor opening faults at right. Ex David Springbett (Lot 785). A remarkable origin/destination cover. Carried per "Gwalior" to Galle, "Cathay" to Alexandria, & "Ceylon" to Brindisi.
1945 stampless cover with sender's address "Sgt C Rae 2/3 Aust AA" - then located at Labuan - to "Lt Col C Rae/Changi Camp/Singapore", endorsed in pencil "Not at Singapore/...[?]/16 9 45/PM" & with a very fine strike of the rare 'IT IS REGRETTED THIS LETTER COULD/NOT BE FORWARDED IN TIME TO CONNECT/WITH THE SHIP OR AIRCRAFT ON WHICH/ADDRESSEE WAS REPATRIATED' h/s in violet, part '.../RETURN TO SENDER' h/s in violet. [The sender was the addressee's nephew. His notes - included with the cover - states "I was stationed with 9th Battery, 2/3rd Australian Light Anti-Aircraft on Labuan Island...POWs were in transit through the island...Unknown to the family Robert Cecil Rae had died one month before the surrender of the Japs...[He] was initially imprisoned at Changi Camp but later moved to Sime Road prison. The move to Sime Road was not known by his family..." or, it would seem, by the authorities processing POWs]

1974 World Population 35c with the Emerald Printing (Male Symbol) Omitted SG #239a marginal example from the right of the sheet, unmounted, Cat £600 (Pierron Cat £600).

1906 (Oct) "red band" greetings cover to Singapore with Wat Jang 2stg & 8stg only tied to the reverse by 'SINGAPORE/OC31/1906' arrival cds, 'T'-in-triangle backstamp & mss "2" on the face. Ex Len Colgan.
MALAYA: "Straits Settlements Postage Stamps" by Dr FE Wood (1st reprint, 1961), minor creasing and a few small tears, 136pp softbound.
