The extensive balance of the collection with good selections of philatelic Antarctic covers from Argentina (including 1905 PPC with superb 'ORCADAS DEL SUD/DISTRITO 24 GALLEGOS' cds in blue & 1950 stampless commercial cover to GB), Chile, Russia, Belgium (including 1957 M/S mint & on cover) & South Africa (including closure of Marion Island PO cover) plus lesser groups from Japan, Norway etc, also some mint stamps & a few Arctic items. AUSTRALIAN: 1911 commercial cover endorsed "No 2/Letter", to Sydney with Tasmanian 1d tied by one of two superb strikes - one on the reverse - of the 'LOOSE SHIPS LETTER/POSTED AT/MACQUARIE ISLAND/[penguin]/ S.Y. AURORA/A.A.E.' cachet, superb 'HOBART/21DE11/TASMANIA' transit cds, damp-spotting. [The sender was Expedition member Charles Francis Laseron, a naturalist & taxidermist. He was awarded the Polar Medal for his book "South with Mawson". In later life he was an auctioneer of stamps & coins]ÞÞThe "Aurora" departed Hobart on 2/12/1911. She was accompanied as far as Macquarie Island by the supply ship SS "Toroa", on which this cover was carried back to Hobart. [Kevin Dwyer's similar but finer cover sold for $4370 at our auction of 13/9/2008]
AUSTRALIAN: a PPC of the "Aurora" also from the first mail, to Sydney with Tasmanian 1d tied by one of three fine to superb strikes - one on the reverse - of the Macquarie Island "penguin" cachet, superb Hobart transit cds, minor blemishes on the viewside. Marjorie Wharton states: "The very few examples of this card...seen have all been used on the Expedition". [The message is signed "George Dovers", the Expedition's cartographer. Kevin Dwyer's similar PPC with the 'ANTARCTICA' cachet sold for $5290 at our auction of 13/9/2008]
AUSTRALIAN: 1912 commercial cover to Sydney with a largely very fine strike of the 'LOOSE SHIPS LETTER/POSTED AT/ANTARCTICA/[penguin]/S.Y. AURORA/A.A.E.' cachet, Tasmanian 1d tied by 'HOBART/12MR12/TASMANIA' transit cds, ironed-out fold at the base & minor blemishes. [The sender was Expedition member Charles Francis Laseron. The "Aurora" arrived back at Hobart on 12/3/1912]

FRENCH: Mounted collection including 1948 Terre Adelie Overprint mint & on two covers, 1952-55 six covers with Madagascar stamps & Base cancels, 1955 Overprint mint & on three covers, 1956-62 stamps largely complete mint to 200fr plus 50fr imperf pair, plus an array of philatelic covers with better values to 100fr plus 50fr & 100fr Penguins on two maximum cards, etc. (Qty 27 + 46 covers)
FRENCH: c.1912 Louis Delore cover to France with 15c Sower tied by a very fine strike of the second cachet 'REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE/RESIDENCE/DE/FRANCE/ILES KERGUELEN'. [David Flaat's three similar covers sold for an average of $US1610 at auction in 2009] ÞÞThe Kerguelen Islands were annexed to Madagascar in 1893 but settlement began only in 1908. Postal services started the following year. The settlement was abandoned in 1925 when the whaling station closed.
UNITED STATES: 1929-62 mounted collection of philatelic covers including 1929-30 Byrd Expedition x5, 1934 with 'THIS LETTER HAS BEEN DELAYED FOR ONE YEAR...' cachet, 1955 USS "Atka" & USS "Glacier" flight covers, 1956 McMurdo Sound to South Pole flight cover, 1957 USS "Glacier" to Peru flight cover etc etc, also 1961 commercial cover to Australia, plus a few photographs & press clippings.
