1861 Perkins Bacon 1/- imperforate plate proof pair in deep green on ungummed unwatermarked paper, margins good to large. Superb & gorgeous!
1864-79 Recess by De La Rue from Perkins Bacon Plates 2d imperforate colour trial in deep emerald-green - a gorgeous shade - on ungummed Wmk Crown/CC (Upright) paper, margins close to good, minor clipped corner at upper-right clear of the design. Rare. [The well-known series of colour trials - in which the 2d is in blue - are all on unwatermarked paper. Superior to the Ex "Daneswood" example - shaved at the base - that sold for $3910 at our auction of 24/5/2008. They are the only watermarked proofs from this series known to us]
REVENUES: 1941 1d plate proof in scarlet on poor quality cartridge paper marginal block of 18 (6x3) from the right of the sheet. [The use of this paper was a wartime expedient]; also 1d scarlet with headache-inducing Double Print lower-left corner block of 6 (3x2), four units unmounted. (Qty 2 items)

WESTERN AUSTRALIA - Postal History

1881 stampless OHMS cover to Newcastle (WA) with Perth cds, '[crown]/PAID' and [crown]/REGISTERED' handstamps, endorsed "Not known here", a little spotty. Ex Hans Karman: acquired for $747 at auction in 2004. [With the original Land Act enclosure]
1885 stampless OHMS cover with printed 'TO BE REGISTERED' at upper-left, to Quindalup with 'PERTH/WA - WEST/AUSTRALIA' duplex & 'R'-in-cogwheel h/s, 'VASSE' b/s & endorsed "Try Elsewhere", 'ADVERTISED/ AND/UNCLAIMED' h/s in red, 'POSTAL & TELEGRAPH DEPARTMENT/3JUN86/GPO PERTH WA' d/s in purple, folded at the top & opened-out. Ex Hans Karman: acquired for $460 at auction in 2004.
1887 cover to Germany - a scarce destination from WA in this period - with exceptional 3-colour franking of 1d yellow-ochre, 2d yellow pair & 4d carmine x2 all tied by 15-bar '23' cancels, largely very fine strike of the rare unframed 'WILLIAM RIVER/("11.11.87")/=WESTERN-AUSTRALIA=' h/s with manuscript date inserted, Perth b/s & two superb strikes of the curved '[crown]/REGISTERED' h/s in rosine!, Brindisi transit & superb Berlin arrival b/s. A magnificent cover of great rarity and beauty. In the Pope & Reynolds Census, this is #4 of only 4 covers & 2 pieces recorded with the 12-bar '23', and one of only 2 covers with the 'WILLIAM RIVER' cds. Williams River PO opened 13/11/1866; renamed Williams 6/1/1873.̃̃The 'WILLIAM RIVER' marking is something of an enigma. There was a similar but correctly inscribed oval 'WILLIAMS RIVER' marking, recorded in PMI used to 26/8/1876 (well after the name was changed). This was succeeded by a 'WILLIAMS' cds, recorded between 18/3/1881 & 4/7/1907. However, PMI notes the 'WILLIAM RIVER' h/s used between 9/2/1884 & 11/11/1887 (this cover) within the period of use of the cds. We suggest that this was in the nature of an emergency marking: originally rejected because of the inscriptional error, it was held at the PO and used when the 'WILLIAMS' cds was unavailable. As indicated by the illustration in PMI, It may have been originally supplied with dateslugs: if the illustration is accurate, we suggest that the year slug was inverted, providing a new ERD of OC21/81. [It is a measure of the rarity of the early datestamps that there was no cover with either the 'WILLIAMS RIVER' or 'WILLIAM RIVER' marking in Dr Cecil Walkley's collection]
1901-07 commercial covers 1) with 2d & 5d and boxed 'NO.../REGISTERED/20FEB1901/BOULDER WA' d/s (the later of only two examples recorded), stained; 2) with 1d x5 & fancy boxed 'No.../REGISTERED/23SEP1903/ LAWLERS WA' d/s in purple; 3) 1907 with 5d & 'DAVYHURST/WESTERNAUSTRALIA' cds; & 4) with 5d tied by bars cancel (LRD) & superb 'MINGENEW/JU15/06/WA' cds. Scarce quartet. (Qty 4)
