WESTERN AUSTRALIA - 1855 "Penny Black"

FOUR PENCE - IMPERFORATE: 4d pale blue SG 3 horizontal pair [108-109] the first unit with Diagonal White Line from between 'R' & 'P' of 'FOUR PENCE' to 'G' of 'POSTAGE', margins close to good, ironed-out vertical crease across the first unit & between the units, unused, Cat £750+. ̃̃In our experience, SG 3 & 3a are so often, and so easily, confused that there is no practical value in trying to segregate them. We believe a catalogue entry that states "blue/pale blue (shades)" would be more useful.

An excellent specialist piece: [155] is one of the Creased Transfers recorded by Brian Pope, with the 'R' of 'FOUR' & 'PE' of 'PENCE' Compressed. FOUR PENCE - IMPERFORATE: 4d deep dull blue SG 3b, good even margins, unused, Cat £2500. Much scarcer than SG 3c, the "slate-blue", which is priced 30% higher. BPA Certificate (2008) refers to a totally undetectable "vertical crease in the right margin". [This stamp has slightly larger and more regular margins than Sir Gawaine Baillie's example that sold for $4600]

FOUR PENCE - IMPERFORATE: 4d deep dull blue SG 3b, margins close to good, unused, Cat £2500. ̃̃This is a rare shade from the first printing. According to Brian Pope it is difficult to correctly identify. At page 18 he states "The first printing sometimes seems to have smaller lettering & a greenish tinge & often lacks detail in the water below the swan", which might help identify the printing but is quite unhelpful for identifying the shade. In any event, most examples offered are deep but not dull shades of blue. We are of the opinion that the catalogue listing should be amended as follows: SG 3 deep dull blue; SG 3a blue/pale blue (shades); SG 3b slate-blue.

FOUR PENCE - IMPERFORATE: CATALOGUED TRANSFER VARIETIES: 4d blue with 'T' of 'POSTAGE' Shaved to a Point at Foot SG 3d, margins just clear to good, 15-bars '8' of Fremantle, Cat £1000. [This variety occurs once in each pane of 60. [See also Lot 49]̃̃Gibbons lists twenty-two Transfer Varieties SG 3d to 3y. #3e to 3h - the famous Inverted Frame - are exceptionally rare & occur only in the first printing. All the others are very elusive. Fine examples appear at auction very infrequently. With five unused & six used stamps, this is the third largest group we are aware of having been offered at auction. The "Austin" (du Pont) Collection had 14 of these rare varieties. Frank Chadwick had 21. Dr Cecil Walkley had only SG 3d & 3w unused, and SG 3i 3j & 3s used.
