PS

A-

1902 1d EN1 in carmine, Pope & Thomas's "Die 11" with Decapitated Swan, locally used at Perth 3DEC10, very minor blemishes. [A new supply of envelopes in 1912 was printed in deep shades of carmine on rough unsurfaced stock. Carmine examples from earlier requisitions are rare. Pope & Thomas's reference to "dies" should be to "electros". The Decapitated Swan electro was used for the 1908 1d Fleet Card]

1902 2d blue EN4, flap stuck & some very faint spotting, unused. Rare: probably fewer than a dozen unused examples have been recorded. [A very similar example sold for $1035 at our auction of 29/11/2008. Margaret Hamilton's unused example sold for $2530: at the time it was believed to be the only recorded unused example. This and the next two lots each have the Apostrophe Between 'T' & 'E' of 'WESTERN' variety]

1902 2d blue EN4, to Holland with 'FREMANTLE' cds of 10OC08, 'AMSTERDAM' arrival b/s of 10-11/1908 & postman's 'B 430'-in-capsule h/s on the reverse, minor blemishes. Rare: possibly the finest used example of the six or so recorded. [Although printed in 1902, it seems that none were actually issued for some years. This example, the ERU, is more than two years earlier than the PSAC's ERU of 12/11/1910! Margaret Hamilton's used example to Canada - torn through the stamp - sold for $1955]

B

1912 Intermediate Die (22x18mm) 1d deep carmine on rough unsurfaced wove stock EN7, to Sydney with poor Sandstone cds of DEC12, ironed-out vertical fold & a couple of minor repaired opening tears. Rare & underrated. [Brian Pope lists the 1912 printing but doesn't note that it is in a distinct shade, on a different type of paper, or that the die is of an intermediate size. These three factors are all important for identifying these rare envelopes, of which no unused example, and only a few used examples have been recorded]

1902-06 Text in Red Size G 3d bright red-brown Knife 2 but with the lower flap cut at 60 degree angle RE2, to Germany with 2d tied by 'R'-in-oval h/s, rubber oval 'REGISTERED BRANCH/30AUG02/KALGOORLIE, W.A.' d/s, Perth transit b/s of 1SEP1902 & 'MAGDEBURG' arrival b/s. Sub-type unlisted in the PSAC. A highly desirable item, being the earliest recorded usage of any WA stamped Registration Envelope. This item is symptomatic of the problems with the PSAC listing. RE1.1 - red text, brown stamp, Knife 2 - was printed only in 1906. However, on the face of it, this item is RE1.1, used four years before it was printed!! Not only has the knife not been properly identified, the PSAC's ERU for RE1 - Knife 1 - of 30/8/1902, surely refers to this item, which is definitely not RE1.
