O

1860-88 Two Pence plating study in two springback albums with a separate page for each of the 120 positions on the plate, each page with an enlarged diagram indicating the features of that position, all positions represented by examples in orange (41), blue (306), yellow (862) &/or grey (175), condition a bit variable but generally fine to very fine, some postmark interest, Cat £12,500 (minimum). Ex Max Reynolds. [The lot includes a copy of "The 2d Perkins Bacon Plate 1860-88" by Brian Pope & Max Reynolds (1995) - based on this collection - in which the authors speculate that the albums are the work of Dr Harry Osborne and Frank Chadwick. Careful inspection likely to reveal many better stamps that are not reflected in the quoted catalogue value] (Qty 1384)

Selection with unused x2 (one with margins just clear to good, the other with margins just clear to large), and used x5 with full margins - one a large stamp but with a fault at the top - including one with a fair void grid cancel in red; Cat £3575; also an unconvincing rouletted example offered "as is". (Qty 7)

ISSUED STAMPS - IMPERFORATE: 1d black SG 1 vertical strip of 3, margins close to good, void grid cancels in black, Cat £825+. Rare multiple. BPA Certificate (2003) mentions a "corner crease at upper-left" that neither we nor our vendor can see. [Multiples larger than pairs are rarely seen. #O

FOUR PENCE - IMPERFORATE: 4d pale blue/blue SG 3 & 3a plated examples showing Intermediate Stone Flaws - that each appear four times on the sheet of 240 - unused x7 & used x2, and Final Stone Flaws - that each appear only once - used x5 (one cut-to-shape), mostly with full margins but a few are close in places, Cat £4000+ minimum plus a premium for the varieties. (Qty 14)

FOUR PENCE - IMPERFORATE: 4d pale blue SG 3 horizontal pair [108-109] the first unit with Diagonal White Line from between 'R' & 'P' of 'FOUR PENCE' to 'G' of 'POSTAGE', margins close to good, ironed-out vertical crease across the first unit & between the units, unused, Cat £750+. ̃̃In our experience, SG 3 & 3a are so often, and so easily, confused that there is no practical value in trying to segregate them. We believe a catalogue entry that states "blue/pale blue (shades)" would be more useful.

FOUR PENCE - IMPERFORATE: 4d blue SG 3a horizontal pair [155-156] the left-hand unit with Bug-Eyed Swan, margins good to large with a fragment of the adjoining unit at upper-left, unused, Cat £900+. An excellent specialist piece: [155] is one of the Creased Transfers recorded by Brian Pope, with the 'R' of 'FOUR' & 'PE' of 'PENCE' Compressed. [156] is one of the Substituted Transfers for the Inverted Frame, having a slight Bulge over 'AG' of 'POSTAGE' & the Frame almost Touching 'E' of 'POSTAGE'.
