1870 (Dec 12) cover to Edinburgh "Via Brindisi" with rare franking of Perf 12½ 1d bistre & 1/- bright green SG 52 & 61, 15-bar '6' & Albany cds at lower-left, 'PRESTONPANS' arrival b/s, the 1/- was folded over the top of the cover from which the flap has been removed & the fold opened-out, docketed "Melbourne/6 Decr 70" (which indicates the letter was written in Melbourne but carried privately to Albany where it entered the mails). Pope & Reynolds Census #31. Ex Dr Cecil Walkley: acquired for $3450. RPSof V Certificate (2012). An important cover: believed to be the only 1/1d rate cover from Western Australia. Carried per "Avoca" 12/12/1870; "Candia" from Galle 28/12/1870; & "Delta" from Alexandria 14/1/1871; arrived Brindisi 18/1/1871.ŞŞBecause of the Franco-Prussian War, the via Marseilles route was closed on 13/9/1870. Between -/11/1870 and -/12/1871 the via Brinidisi mails were carried via Verona, Munich, Mainz, Cologne & Ostende. The 13d rate was announced in London on 19/10/1870 & advice was received in Australia late in -/11/1870.

1883 (Aug 7) cover to Italy "per Pekin" with Perf 14 1d yellow-ochre & 6d lilac tied by poor 15-bar '6' cancels, fine Albany cds at base, fumigated at Venice where cut by three chisel slits (one affecting the 1d, another through the complete Union Bank of Australia wafer on the flap), Naples arrival, upright-oval '1A/DIST/11/SET/83' & '81'-in-heart postman's backstamps, minor faults. Ex Patrick Pearson and Dr Cecil Walkley: acquired for $3105. RPSofV Certificate (2011). Carried "Pekin" 7/8/1883; then "Venetia" from Aden direct to Venice arrived 9/9/1883. A very scarce 7d rate cover: see "Black Swan" (Mar 1987). Pope & Reynolds Census #54. [A cholera outbreak in Egypt caused Italian authorities to accept mail from the East only if it was not trans-shipped in Egypt]
