1885 PENNY ON THREEPENCE: '1d.' with Curved Upper Serif on 3d pale brown as SG 91 but with the Overprint Double in Pale Yellow & in Pale Green, no gum. Rare. [John Gartner had a block of 4, with a RPSofL Certificate stating "presumably of proof status": its current whereabouts is unknown. Ric Slade-Slade had two singles: as his sale was only months after Gartner, it is unlikely that these were from the Gartner block. A single was sold at a Sydney auction in 2008 for $3450. That & this example may well be the Slade-Slade stamps. Neither the Gartner nor Slade-Slade stamps were illustrated]

Ex Ric Slade-Slade & Dr Cecil Walkley: acquired for $2645 at our auction of 2/10/2010. RPSofV Certificate (2008). [One pane of 60 was affected. Singles are rarely available as most examples survive in strips & blocks including two blocks of 12]

[This is an interesting specialist piece. The WASG "Handbook" at page 103 states that the overprinting forme was "6 rows of 10". However, from the variation in positioning of the overprint on this half-sheet, it is clear that the forme was quite different, possibly 6 rows of 5, or even 2 rows of 5. For illustrations, see the website]
