WESTERN AUSTRALIA - 1864-81 Watermark CC
IMPERFORATE PLATE PROOFS ON CROWN/CC PAPER: 6d single in deep (aniline) indigo-violet with the Watermark Upright with small sans serif 'SPECIMEN.' handstamp (Samuel #D5), margins just clear to large, part o.g. Ex "Koh-i-Noor" and Bill McCredie. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2004) states "very rare".
IMPERFORATE PLATE PROOFS ON CROWN/CC PAPER: 1/- block of 4 in bright green with the Watermark Upright, margins close to good, large-part o.g. with the third unit being unmounted. Blocks are rare.

IMPERFORATE PLATE PROOFS ON CROWN/CC PAPER: 1/- perforated single in bright green with the Watermark Upright with small sans serif 'SPECIMEN.' handstamp (Samuel #D5) applied vertically (reading downwards), cut from the sheet to preserve the design, no gum. Rare. Ex Bill McCredie. [This handstamp was used mainly for stamps retained by De La Rue for their archives]
ISSUED STAMPS: 1864-79 Perf 12½ 1d to 1/- SG 52-62 with most listed shades (ex 2d mauve & 6d indigo-violet), the 2d yellow with a few trimmed perfs, the 4d marginal with part-sheetmaker's watermark in the margin, mostly with large-part o.g., Cat £1600. (Qty 10)
ISSUED STAMPS: 1864-79 Perf 12½ 2d mauve Error of Colour, light vertical crease, regummed, Cat £15,000. Ex John Gartner: acquired for $12,075 at our auction of 19/3/2005. RPSofV Certificate (1984) doesn't mention that the stamp has been regummed. [This is the stamp illustrated by Mogens Juhl at page 32 of "Philately from Western Australia". Dr Cecil Wakley's regummed example sold for $18,400. Sir Gawaine Baillie's very fine mint example sold for $41,400]
ISSUED STAMPS: 1864-79 Perf 12½ 6d violet as SG 57 but with the Watermark Upright (Inverted), aged, no gum. Unpriced unused.
ISSUED STAMPS: 1871-73 De La Rue New Design 3d imperforate plate proof marginal block of 4 from the base of the sheet in pale brown on ungummed unwatermarked highly surfaced paper, all units overprinted 'CANCELLED', minor toning on the reverse. [Dr Cecil Walkley's similar corner block of 4 sold for $1552]
ISSUED STAMPS: 1871-73 De La Rue New Design 3d pale brown SG 63 block of 6, and 3d cinnamon SG 63a block of 9 (seven units unmounted), with wing-margins at base or at top, large-part o.g., Cat £750++.
ISSUED STAMPS: 1874 Surcharge 'ONE PENNY' in Green on 2d yellow stated to be the three settings identified by Mogens Juhl, the second with a small filled thin, the last is creased, part- to large-part o.g., Cat £1500+. See "Philately from Western Australia" at page 33. [While there are minor differences in the placement of the overprint on the second and third stamps, they are essentially the same]
ISSUED STAMPS: 1874 Surcharge 'ONE PENNY' in Green on 2d yellow central setting (Juhl Stg 2 or 3) as SG 67 but with the Watermark Reversed, one tiny pinhole, unused. Unlisted by Gibbons. [Gibbons list the watermark inverted & reversed SG 67y, which may be a typographical error. That variety is unpriced unused]
ISSUED STAMPS: 1874 Surcharge 'ONE PENNY' in Green on 2d yellow low setting (Juhl Stg 1) with Triple Surcharge, well centred, neat 9-bar '4' cancel of Greenough, Cat £5000. Ex Dr Cecil Walkley: acquired for $4140. [Juhl states that one trial sheet with three impressions of the surcharge was placed into stock. Half the sheet was sent to Greenough - from where 5 examples are recorded - and the other half was sent to was sent to Geraldton, from where 4 examples are recorded]
ISSUED STAMPS: 1876-81 Perf 14 1d to 6d SG 68-75c complete listed shades, a few minor defects, mostly with part- to large-part o.g., Cat £1290. (Qty 7)
ISSUED STAMPS: 1876-81 Perf 14 6d lilac SG 75 block of 4, well centred (especially the upper pair), large-part o.g. with the lower pair being unmounted, Cat £640++.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA - 1882-95 Watermark Crown/CA
1882-85 Perf 14 1d to 6d SG 76-80 complete (the 6d lilac is SG 80y but has no gum) plus Watermark Varieties SG 76w 77w 78w & 80w, mostly with large-part o.g., Cat £870. (Qty 9)
1882-85 Perf 12x14 1d yellow-ochre SG 81, one pulled perf at upper-right, unused, Cat £2500. A very rare stamp unused. Ex "Sovereign". Alex Rendon Certificate (1994). [There was no unused example in any of the Chadwick, Gartner, Slade-Slade, "Austin" (du Pont), Juhl, Basterfield, Walkley or Baillie collections. In fact, we couldn't find any record of another unused example]
1882-85 Perf 12x14 1d yellow-ochre SG 81 [28, Double-Tailed Swan], light 9-bars '8' cancel of Fremantle just impinges on the flaw, Cat £150+.
1882-85 Perf 12 1d ochre SG 82 x2, 2d yellow SG 83 & 83w (marginal), 4d carmine SG 84 & 84w, 6d lilac 85 & 85w (both with no gum), mostly with part- to large-part o.g., Cat £1600. (Qty 7)
1888 New Colours 1d carmine-pink, 2d grey (a little aged), 2d silver-grey (a couple of tonespots) & 4d red-brown SG 103-105 blocks of 4, large-part o.g., Cat £980+. (Qty 4 blocks)

1884 HALFPENNY ON PENNY: '½' on Wmk Crown/CC Perf 14 1d yellow-ochre SG 89 block of 10 (5x2), the fourth unit with Defective (Grinning) '2' in '½' & the eighth unit with '2' in Fraction Misplaced to Left of '1', large-part o.g. with eight units being unmounted, Cat £230++. [Dr Cecil Walkley's block of 9 - at the time believed to be the largest surviving Perf 14 block - sold for $1035]
