WESTERN AUSTRALIA - 1855 "Penny Black"

61

#

A

ONE SHILLING - IMPERFORATE: 1/- dark choclolate [40, Dot below 'IA' of 'AUSTRALIA'], margins close to large, 'STOLOW' guarantee h/s on the reverse. A rare & unlisted shade sometimes referred to as "Tomasini" brown. ̃̃It is quite perverse that Gibbons list difficult to identify shades such as the 4d deep dull blue & the 1/- salmon, but fail to list a really striking shade like this "dark chocolate". Certainly it is known and accepted by many advanced collectors as a separate and very distinct shade.

ONE SHILLING - IMPERFORATE: 1/- dark choclolate, margins just touching - at right - to good, neat void grid cancel, 'Mm' guarantee h/s on the reverse. [Superior to Dr Cecil Walkley's example - a little cut-into at left - that sold for $3910]

ONE SHILLING - IMPERFORATE: ROULETTED: 1/- grey-brown SG 6 from the top of the sheet, an unusually large stamp with large even margins, a fragment of the adjoining unit below & part marginal sheet watermark 'POSTAG[E]...' at the top, rouletted except at the top, 15-bars '3' cancel of Perth, Cat £1100. A rarity: absent from most of the major collections & significantly undervalued relative to SG 6a. BPA Certificate (1993). [While collectors and dealers are wise to be very cautious with the rouletted issues, a stamp of this size is unlikely to be faked]

TWO PENCE - IMPERFORATE: 2d brown-black/pale red SG 15 from the right of the sheet (with vertical marginal watermark lines), large margins at left & base with a portion of the adjoining unit below, just shaved at top & base, unusual speckled effect at right that suggests the red "paper" was in fact a red wash applied after the printing, unused, Cat £4000. RPSofV Certificate (2012). [A large and most unusual example of this rare unused stamp]

TWO PENCE - IMPERFORATE: 2d brown-black/pale red Printed on Both Sides SG 15a with the image on the reverse inverted, large margins with fragments of adjoining units at right & base, just touching at left & a bit cut-into at the top, unused, Cat £4500. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2007) states "Great rarity in unused condition".̃̃This variety is significantly underrated unused, and the Gibbons "premium" of only 12½% is ridiculous. This is the only example of which we could find a record: it was absent from all the major collections that we referred to.

TWO PENCE - IMPERFORATE: 2d brown-black/pale red Printed on Both Sides SG 15a with the image on the reverse upright, from the base of the sheet with a huge margin & marginal watermark lines at the base, large margin at left with a chunk of the adjoining unit, just clear to just shaved at top & right, void grid cancel unusually largely clear of the Swan, Cat £800. A remarkable example, and one of the largest 2d stamps we have seen. [In our experience, most examples have the two impressions inverted in relation to one another]

TWO PENCE - IMPERFORATE: ROULETTED: 2d brown-black/Indian red SG 21, rouletted on all sides with good margins at left - with a fragment of the adjoining unit - & at base, misplaced roulettes at right but cut from the sheet to preserve the design, 15-bars '1' cancel of Perth, Cat £1800. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2009) states "...contemporary separation. Extremely rare".

SIX PENCE - IMPERFORATE: 6d golden-bronze SG 17 with obvious metallic lustre, margins good to large - except at the top where just touching - with a fragment of the adjoining unit at left, a couple of very minor tonespots, void grid cancel, Cat £2000. Ex Frank Chadwick (Lot 2224). Bernard et Pascal Behr Certificate (2006). ̃̃Dr Cecil Walkley distinguished this issue on the basis of the presence - SG 17, 18 & 22 - or absence - SG 19 & 23 - of microscopic metallic particles. The so-called "bronze" component is shown under x-ray fluorescence to be "gilding metal" or brass, with a copper to zinc ratio of 85:15.

SIX PENCE - IMPERFORATE: 6d golden-bronze SG 17 [137, Clipped Wings], a deep rich shade with obvious metallic lustre, margins just clear - at left - to large with fragments of the adjoining units at right & the base, void grid cancel, Cat £2000+. Ex Dale-Lichtenstein. BPA Certificate (2005). Rare this fine. [A larger example than Dr Cecil Walkley's very fine stamp without a variety that sold for $7762]

SIX PENCE - IMPERFORATE: 6d black-bronze SG 18 with metallic lustre, an unusually large example with margins close to good, untidy void grid cancel, Cat £650. [This is a contentious stamp. The metallic lustre is quite strong & some might characterise it as a "golden-bronze". However, the printing is paler than the golden-bronzes above so we are comfortable with it being identified as the "cheaper" shade]
