1839 lengthy missionary entire headed "Bathurst 21st June 1839" & signed "Fredk Lewis", to London with a worn but clear strike of the rounded-boxed 'PAID AT/BATHURST' h/s in red & unusually without a Bathurst d/s, rated "1-" (1/-) for 9d inland carriage + 3d shipletter), very fine '[crown]/GENERAL POST OFFICE/SYDNEY' b/s & 'PAID SHIP LETTER/[crown]/SYDNEY' d/s in red on the face, boxed 'INDIA LETTER/BRIGHTON' h/s in red across the flap & London arrival b/s, rated "1/-" for 4d India letter + 8d Brighton-London, very attractive. Carried per "Andromache", departed Sydney 30/6/1839, departed Rio 21/9/1839, arrived off Lewes 19/11/1839. [The writer speaks of "the termination of a long and calamitous drought...threatened us with all the miseries of famine...provisions of every description are [priced] remarkably high..."]
