Selection of Classics comprising Couriers 4d singles x4 with almost full margins - plus four more repaired - & a vertical pair, Chalons Star Wmk 1d, 2d x4 and 4d single & pair, Numeral Wmk 1d x4 (one with a Pre-Printing Paper Fold, two possibly unused), 2d x2, 4d x6 & 6d x3, and Perf 4d x2, 6d x10 including two very deep shades & 1/- x6 including a rare block of 4 (trimmed perfs at the top), condition rather mixed but many are sound to fine &/or attractive, high catalogue value.(Qty 51)
"The Stamps of Tasmania: A History of the Postage Stamps, Envelopes, Post Cards, Adhesive and Impressed Revenue & Excise Stamps of Tasmania" by AB Hull (1890), requires rebinding but the pages are generally very fine & the large foldout map is (unusually) undamaged, 136pp + 9 plates of "Autotype Illustrations" tipped-in, hardbound in quarter-leather. A rare and important work from this early period. [A very fine copy sold for $1450 in our literature auction of Dec 2008]
1853 Couriers Thin Hard White Paper 1d pale blue SG 3, margins good to large with complete outer framelines, BN '60' of Hobart, Cat £1200. David Brandon Certificate (2004) as SG 4.
1855 Chalons Wmk Large Star 1d carmine (3½ margins, with fragments of adjoining units at top & right), 2d green (margins just clear to good) & 4d blue (margins close to good) SG 14 16 & 18, Cat £1370.

1855 Chalons Wmk Large Star 1d carmine SG 14 horizontal strip of 3, margins close to large except where just touching at the base of the second & third units, light numeral cancels, Cat £2400+. A rare & attractive multiple. Ex Gene Tinsley & David Cohen. RPSofL Certificate (1991).
1855 Chalons Wmk Large Star 2d deep green SG 15, margins good to large with a fragment of the adjoining unit above, lightly cancelled, Cat £500. Superb! RPSofL Certificate (1983).
1856-57 No Watermark 2d dull emerald-green SG 20, margins close to good, Brun guarantee h/s on the reverse, Cat £900. Unusually fine for this issue.
1858 'TASMANIA' 6d imperforate plate proof block of 4 in black on ungummed unwatermarked paper, clear margins on all sides. Superb, and of exceptional appearance. [It is believed that only a couple more blocks of 4 exist]
1863-71 Private & Experimental Separations Pin-Perf 13½-14½ 1d dull vermilion SG 112, manuscript cancellation removed, Cat £650 postally used.
1863-71 Private & Experimental Separations Pin-Perf 13½-14½ 6d grey-violet SG 116, a few aberrant perfs but unusually well centred, light BN cancel, Cat £1100. A very rare stamp.
1870-71 First Sidefaces 4d die proof in blue on glazed card (92x60mm), a couple of insignificant blemishes but no surface rubbing. Rare & highly desirable.
1870-71 First Sidefaces 4d blue SG 130, deep shade & well centred, unused, Cat £900. An unusually attractive unused example.
1886 Provisionals Colonial Keyplate with Blank Tablet in doubly-fugitive purple on Wmk 'TAS' paper & overprinted 'TASMANIA/POSTAGE & REVENUE/TWO SHILLINGS/AND SIXPENCE' marginal example from the right of the left-hand pane, exceptional centring, large-part o.g. Unissued. [The Colonial Agents requisitioned 2/6d & 10/- stamps from De La Rue. However, in 1882 Tasmania had authorised postal use of revenue stamps printed in the Colony. Hobart advised the Crown Agents of this fact & advised that the proposed stamps would be "useless". However, London knows best so they were printed and despatched but they were never issued: see Eaton at pp431-436]
1892-1900 Tablets De La Rue imperforate 'IMPERIUM' essay 6d in brown & violet with 'TASMANIA' hand-painted in China white. Delightful! Ex David Cohen: sold for £2232 (= $A5580 at the time) at auction in 2007.
1899-1900 De La Rue Pictorials ½d to 6d imperforate plate proofs in the issued colours on ungummed watermarked paper being matching marginal pairs from the top (horizontal designs) or right (vertical designs, with half-cross only) with perforating guideline '+' in the margins. A delightful set. (Qty 8 pairs)
1899-1900 De La Rue Pictorials ½d to 6d blocks of 4, well centred, the 2d with gum-bend across the upper units otherwise very fine to superb, full unmounted o.g., Cat £520++ as mounted singles. Very scarce, especially this fine. (Qty 8 blocks)
