1853 Couriers Plate II (Coarser Engraving) 4d orange SG 10 [5], good even margins, tied by bold '64' of Hobart to small flapless cover to Victoria "Per Steamer Clarence" with a largely good strike of the 38mm 'GENERAL POST OFFICE/HOBART TOWN/[crown]/NO1/VDL/1853' cds in red alongside, 'GEELONG/NO7/__/VICTORIA' arrival b/s in red ink as used for incoming shipletters, the cover opened-out & stained. Ex BD Forster & Koichi Sato. RPSofV Certificate (1995) confirms the date of use & states "genuine". BPA Certificate (1996) states "the date of [the Hobart Town cds] is not possible to decipher" and "adhesive lifted and replaced".

Leading Tasmanian postal historian Randall Askeland has advised us that most mail for Victoria went via Launceston, "Clarence" departing that port on 5.11.1853, arriving Melbourne 7.11.1853, and that the Geelong mails were often put aboard a lighter in Corio Bay. He tells us "Noone has raised any issue with the stamp or the cancel" and he believes "the item is genuine in all respects". This famous cover supports the contention that Plate II printings were issued before stamps from Plate I.
