1940 cover to Holland with KGVI 3d blue tied Sydney '3 APR/1940' slogan cancel with 'Amsterdam Maart 1948/Door oorlogsomstandigheden/met vertraging ontvangen' label pasted on the face. [The label translates as "Amsterdam March 1948 Received with delay due to war conditions". Applied to mail which was transiting through France at the time of the German invasion of Holland & which was stored in the cellar of a French castle (!) where it was not discovered until early 1948]

1942 (Feb 14) airmail cover from Melbourne to a member of 2/21 Battalion with 'ARMY POSTAL SERVICE/ DELIVERY IMPRACTICABLE/...' handstamp, minor blemishes. [LCpl William James Chung was a member of "Gull" Force comprising 1131 men who were transported from Darwin by sea to defend Ambon. The Japanese landed 20,000 troops on the island & "Gull" Force was forced to surrender. 779 members died either on Ambon - including 229 who were massacred at Laha after surrendering - or after being moved to the Chinese island of Hainan]

1874 Police Department long cover (268x113mm) with 'CHIEF SECRETARY' Frank Stamp in blue, 'STAWELL WEST/JA26/74/VICTORIA' unframed cds and Barred Numeral '152', endorsed "Registered" but apparently not handled as such and so officially registered on arrival in Melbourne with oval 'REGISTERED' h/s struck on face superscribed "Officially" in manuscript, couple of minor blemishes & light folds. Very unusual use of a handstamp generally seen only on outward mail as an expedient where no other appropriate marking was available.
