CHRISTMAS ISLAND - Postal History
1904 (Apr 28) commercial cover from Wales to a forwarding agent in Calcutta with his cachet on the reverse, forwarded to Japan - a "foreign" destination - so taxed & with 'SINGAPORE TO HONG KONG/29MY/1904' transit b/s, Japanese 'DUE/SEN/...' h/s applied in rosine but the fee not paid & forwarded "co Agents/Christmas Island" with 'VICTORIA/30JU/04/HONG-KONG' & 'TUTICORIN/15JL/04' transit b/s and 'CALCUTTA/20JL04/' arrival b/s from where the agent BK Roy forwarded it to Christmas Island but it was apparently missent to Aden with 'SEA POST OFFICE/JL23/04' b/s, then apparently returned to Calcutta under cover then sent on with 'PENANG TO SINGAPORE/SE3/1904' transit b/s & largely very fine 'CHRISTMAS ISLAND/SE--/1904' arrival cds on the face, further endorsed "[ship] gone to S'pore or Batavia/for repairs", 'SINGAPORE/NO22/1904' arrival b/s, from here returned to the sender with boxed 'REEXPEDIE' h/s, minor soiling as one would expect. A truly remarkable cover that demonstrates the extraordinary lengths to which the Post Offices of this time went to attempt delivery, all for a 1d paid. [Colin Riddell states this is the earliest recorded Christmas Island transit cover, and offers a slightly different explanation of the chain of events, which is included for consideration]
1906 (Aug 2) Scottish PPC to "Mr W Russ Darling/Christmas Island/Via Singapore" with 1d tied by superb 'LARGS RSO AYRSHIRE/=+=' cds, superb 'PENANG TO SINGAPORE' marine sorter cds & largely very fine 28mm 'CHRISTMAS ISLAND/SE12/06' arrival cds both on the address side. Ex Derek Clayton. [One of the finest cards from the Darling Correspondence]
1907 Australian PPC to "Mr Russell Darling/Christmas Island/Via Singapore" with South Australian 1d tied by Adelaide cds, 'SINGAPORE' transit & fair 28mm 'CHRISTMAS ISLAND/DE14/1907' arrival cds on the address side. [Only two other items from Australia have been recorded from this correspondence]
1907 usage of Straits Settlements QV 25c - small faults - with fine part-strike of the first-type 'CHRISTMAS IS[LAND]/DE25/1907/-+-' cds (Christmas Day; the month & day slugs are inverted), affixed to a photocopy of a complete strike to complete the impression.
No longer available
1908 PPC from Scotland to "Miss Darling/Christmas Island/co Messrs Bousteads & Co/Singapore" with KEVII 1d tied by very fine 'PORTPATRICK/WIGTOWNSHIRE' cds & Singapore transit of DE18/1908 on the address side. [Because this card was sent via a forwarding agent, it most likely went between Singapore & Christmas Island in a sealed bag]

1959-64 Australian Postal Agency 1959 (Mar) usage of Australian Territories Aerogramme ACSC #FA3A to Indiana with QE 5c 6c 10c & 12c x2 tied by #2 cds, lengthy social message from a longtime female Chinese resident on the Island. Rare: the ACSC states "unstamped aerogrammes were introduced on Christmas Island 22.12.1958. No example of this issue has been seen." [Posted contrary to regulations that allowed for no more than two stamps on a formular aerogramme]
