C of A - Postal History
1938-49 mostly commercial covers all with 5d Ram frankings including registered, airmails including EAMS to GB x2, advertising covers, 'PB' perfin, postmarks, destinations including Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Holland (with large 'OAT' cachet) & Philippines, uses in TPNG, etc, condition variable but a very good "single-stamp" lot.
1940 (Sep 24) airmail to UK with 5d Ram and Kangaroos 2/- x3 paying 6/5d per ½oz rate for carriage to Hong Kong and PanAm Clipper FAM-14 & FAM-18 services via USA, couple of minor blemishes.
Italy's entry into WWII closed BOAC's Empire Route via the Mediterranean, the only alternatives for airmail to England being the Horseshoe Route via South Africa at 1/6d per ½oz or the PanAm Clipper double-ocean service via Hong Kong. Being more than four-times the cost, the PanAm service was rarely used before July 1941 when their FAM-19 California Clipper service via Auckland at 4/- per ½oz commenced. The BOAC Bangkok-Hong Kong feeder service was suspended at the end of August 1940 due to Japanese pressure and temporarily re-opened for only two flights in early-October. Unless this item was carried on one of those flights, the only other way for it to fly to Hong Kong would have been on the CNAC 'Over The Hump' service from Rangoon via Chungking, China.
