SUBJECTS - ALCOHOL: Guinness 'My Goodness - My Guinness' multi-colour Zookeeper advertising cards with images by artist Gilroy x6 comprising Seal, Pelican,Toucan, Lion, Polar Bear and Kangaroo & Joey each with 'Printed in Great Britain by Sanders Phillips & Co Ltd London' imprint on back #7-12 from the original 1940s printings, plus 'Bottle and Jug' Guinness advertising card featuring Lewis Carroll's Through The Looking-Glass characters, also 1954 advertising booklet sent to Melbourne with GB KGVI 1½d and 'Australia-London' ½d 'CUSTOMS DUTY' both tied London cancel, couple of minor blemishes but mostly fine.

1917 Danish postcard to Shanghai via Siberia with 10o red tied by 'NASTRED' cds, light Russian '..../6R SKCN' train (?) cancel, bold No 17 boxed censor cachet in violet and Russian Post Offices in China 'SHANGHAI POSTE RUSSE/4 7 17' arrival cds alongside.
1910 'Raratonga Island - Javo Road' postcard registered to Tahiti with Pictorials ½d Bird x2 (one on view side) & 1½d Queen (view side) tied by Rarotonga cds, large 'R' label with 'Raratonga' cachet, minor blemishes.
FIJI - Postal History
1903-12 PPCs including 1907 (faults) with 'COLO WEST' straight-line cancels, 1908 & 1909 both with 'S.S. SUVA' h/s (one sent from the docks in Sydney), 1903 stampless to USA via Sydney where taxed, 1912 stampless to Argentina with boxed 'T ("10c")' h/s plus American & Argentine postage due h/s, etc.
1907 'Island Scenery' undivided back postcard to New Caledonia with KEVII 1d red tied to view side by fine strike of 'COLO WEST' straight-line h/s struck over the top of a light impression of what appears to be a Mail Bag Seal, couple of minor blemishes. Hill Province north of Suva.
NEW CALEDONIA: New Caledonia PPC ('Foot-Ball, Match a l'Ause Vata avec Marins du Croiseur anglais Psyche') to Egypt with 5c pair tied to the view by Noumea cds of 6-2/07, light stain on the view. Ex Jim Crompton. [Between 1887 & 1908, a Franco-British Naval Commission operated in the waters of New Hebrides & New Caledonia]
STRAITS SETTLEMENTS: 1902 New Zealand 1d on 1½d Letter Card from Nelson to "DAG de H Farrant/Eastern Extension Tel Co/Singapore", very fine arrival cds on the face, social message congratulating him on his promotion & hoping he will be posted to Sydney. [Dover Augustus George de Horsey Farrant worked for the Eastern Telegraph Co at Singapore from 18.11.1900. From 8.7.1913 he was Superintendent at the Cocos Cable Station from where on 9.11.1914, he sent the message alerting the 'Sydney' to the arrival at Cocos of the German raider 'Emden']
1905 Maroney Undivided Back PPC ('Nouvelles Hebrides - Premiere habitation d'un colon') to New Zealand with NSW 1d tied by 'NEW HEBRIDES/4DE/1905/VILA' cds, stained on the address panel. Ex Jim Crompton.
1906 real photo PPC of a European residence to New Zealand with NSW 1d tied by 'NEW HEBRIDES/ 4JA/1906/VILA' cds, message headed "Arthursleigh/Undine Bay/New Hebrides/1.1.06" states "...What do you think of our little home? The sheds to the left are drying rooms for coffee...We are 500ft above sea level...Let me know if you get this, as these cards are apt to go astray..." Ex Jim Crompton. RPSofL Certificate (1975). [Undine Bay is on the north coast of Efate, some 40km north of Vila by coastal road]
The writer was Mrs Kate Anderson, wife of Rev William Anderson. In 1905 they left mission work to settle at Undine Bay. After running a plantation & trading post, they rejoined the mission in the 1920s. Our thanks to Roland Klinger for this information.
1907 New Caledonia PPC ('Marchands de porcs/Pig Dealers') with message headed "18-5-07 Vila New Hebrides", to Cornwall with GB 1d cancelled on arrival at London JY8/07, 'DULOE' arrival cds, minor blemishes. Ex Jim Crompton. [Between 1887 & 1908, a Franco-British Naval Commission operated in the waters of New Hebrides & New Caledonia. This card was probably from a crew member aboard HMS 'Psyche' which made bi-monthly visits to Vila. New Hebrides stamps were first issued in Oct 1908. This item is much scarcer than cards & covers with NSW stamps cancelled at Vila, that routinely sell for $1000+ each]

1926 Hugh & GK Neill Dunedin Exhibition real photo PPC of crowd in front of entrance to the Amusements Section with Exhibition ½d green & 4d violet tied to the viewside by 'DUNEDIN EXHIBTION/22MR26/NZ' cds, a couple of very minor aging marks.
MACAU: 1970s commercial airmails to East Germany including Chinese illustrated propaganda envelopes x3, registered covers x8, postcards x4 plus uprated 50a Aerogramme with Sailing Junks illustrations, variety of frankings including 50a Hockey & 50a Motorcycle Racing, many with 'PAR AVION/VIA HONG KONG' cachets, generally fine to very fine.
1916-18 inwards group with 'GRI/SAMOA' censor h/s numbered '2' or '3' in green or violet including Australia KGV 1d red frankings x8 one with 'SH/&/CoLtd' perfin plus AH Burnet Grainus illustrated envelope with 'PAID AT/SYDNEY' machine cancel in red, New Zealand x2 noted Auckland '1d' meter with Fiji transit b/s not censored, USA Montgomery Ward cover with 5c (tear), also local Government House PPC (stamp removed) and 5pf Yacht postal card with 'APIA' d/s (no message), condition mixed but mostly fine.
1912 commercial usage of H&B PPC ('Aola...' - schooner at anchor) to France with Small Canoes ½d pair tied by two light but legible strikes of the rare 'BRITISH SOLOMON ISLANDS/MA4/1912/AOLA' cds (Proud #D1; LRD), French arrival cds of 18-5/12, minor crease. PO late-1908; closed mid-1912. [Aola is on the north coast of Guadalcanal. Aola (2) 20.10.1916; closed -.1.1919. Aola (3) mid-1920; closed mid-1922. Type D1 is rated 5000 points, which is HUGE for Proud. John Darnell's similar PPC with equally light strike sold at the Prestige auction of 5.12.2003 for $1456]
The message, signed "RW Gossett", states "...The Austrian Scientific Expedition was lost & murdered in the hills in the interior of this island". Ralph Wayth Gosset was a prominent surveyor & geographer, born in New Zealand, who became an expert on Pacific Islands geography & history. He refers to an 1896 expedition lead by Heinrich Foullon von Norbeck which ventured into the interior where they were attacked & slaughtered by the natives]
1912 commercial usage of H&B PPC ('Aola...' - natives with game) to France with Small Canoes 1d tied by a largely very fine strike of the rare 'BRITISH SOLOMON ISLANDS/MA4/1912/AOLA' cds (Proud #D1; LRD), 'TOURS/18-5/12/ INDRE ET LOIRE' arrival cds. The message, signed "RW Gossett" states "...natives with pigeons & toucans. These postcards are very poor but they are the best I can obtain..." [The Spanish found traces of gold on Guadalcanal as early as the 16th century. Several rushes in the late-19th century & before World War II were largely stillborn]

1962 picture postcard (Native American) airmail to Germany with single franking Prexies 11c Polk (one toned perf) tied 'FOUNTAIN/MAR/16/1962/COLO' cancel. [Late but entirely commercial usage: by the time the airmail postcard rate increased from 10c to 11c on 1.07.1961 the Prexies had been replaced by the Liberty series of which the 11c value was issued on 15.06.1961 for this very purpose]
