1929 large-part parcel tag registered to Melbourne with rare franking of Small Multiple Wmk Perf 14 1/4d greenish blue single - Cat $1500 on cover - and a block of 5 + 6d Roo tied by 'FINGAL/TASMANIA' cds, light bend across the block & minor imperfections. One of the best domestic parcel items we have recorded & the only multiple of the 1/4d stamp we have seen on cover.

The maximum parcel rate at this date was 5/8d. If paid at letter rate of 1˝d per oz, 8/3d = 99d = 66oz. However, Mangana, near Fingal, is credited as being the site of the first official gold discovery in Tasmania. We expect that the parcel contained mineral samples, for which the concessional merchandise sample rate was 1d per 2oz (one-third of the letter rate). On that basis, 8/3d = 99d = 198oz = 12.375 pounds = 5.6kg. In either case, plus 3d registration fee.
