NEW ZEALAND: 1916 cover with rare albeit philatelic franking of Auckland Islands General Grant Expedition 1d green strip of 3 tied by one of three strikes of the 'AUCKLAND ISLANDS/23/MAR/1916/CATLING'S EXPEDITION' cachet, to "Mr JWH Bannerman/Bluff" & endorsed "Per Enterprise" in red at left. A major rarity of Antarctic exploration. [Our vendor states only three covers are recorded with Auckland Island frankings. Included is a brief article featuring one of the other covers, similarly addressed & endorsed but also with 'BLUFF/7JL/16.NZ' arrival b/s, which indicates that the covers were delivered by the post office. The article states that Bannerman was editor of the 'Bluff Press' & that he probably provided the labels & canceller]
