PICTURE POSTCARDS - Subjects
ALCOHOL: Selection of mostly British cards with "Hop Picking Series" x12, a couple of real photo types including a multi-view of 28 different pubs!!, a few advertising cards & some amusing comics including Austrian 1912 "Drunken Village", etc, also Rudolf Blind Aggressive Temperance set of 6 artist cards (superb unused), condition variable but generally fine to very fine. COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA
Wide-ranging group with lots of real photo types including "Swaggers Camp on the river", "A Whale at Eden" (men sitting on the carcass) & "RMS Mariposa Passing under Sydney Harbor [sic] Bridge", many Outback scenes including a few superb Kerry shots, also a few Gold Mining, 1905 5d Stamp Jubilee Card (unused), Tasmanian 1908 Franco-British Exhibition "A Prize Merino Ram" (unused), "Federal Labour [sic] Party: Second Parliament", World War I including eight "silks" (one with the original insert card) in above-average condition, Offshore Islands including Thursday x5, Norfolk x2, King x3, Phillip x2 & Lord Howe, etc, condition variable but many are fine to very fine. ARTIST CARDS: Outback & Rural Australia cards by P Campbell x6, LH Davey x7, ET Declosay x5, Charles Hammond x9 including "Robbery Under Arms" set of 6, J Hutchings x28, MacInnes x6, JH Scheltema x9, JA Turner x28 & C Young x8 etc, condition variable but many are fine to very fine. Ex Bronte Watts.
1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition (San Francisco) multicoloured "Scene on Emu Creek" and green-framed views "Pearling Fleet Thursday Island", "Brisbane from the Observatory", "Crop of Table Grapes" (used in America in 1916 & rare thus), "Store Cattle at Tamrookum", "Examining Tobacco leaf", "Sheep Station Rodney Downs" & "Bending Broom Millett", unused. Very scarce. [We have not previously seen the last four views]
1908 Franco-British Exhibition Government Series "Packing Apples for England" in greenish blue, unused. Rare.
ISLANDS: BRUNY ISLAND: Beattie (Hobart) "Tree Felling" (woodcutters on planks inserted in the trunk), "Pile Cut from Tree" (apparently by hand!), "Bullocks Bringing Piles through Bush to Tram" & "A Cargo of Blue Gum Piles for S Africa", superb unused. A truly remarkable quartet, that are basically advertising cards for Gray Bros Saw Mills at Adventure Bay. Ex Coo-ee Picture Library.
1875-97 group with advertising/advices for William Jackson General Carriers, Waterlow & Sons Printers, Taylor's German Moss Litter, W Mollison Collier (a bit soiled) or Manchester & Liverpool District Bank, also an 1887 Christmas Card, 1890 electoral mailout & 1897 Penny Postage Jubilee insert card posted in 1901, all used with various Halfpenny stamps including 1870 ½d x2, condition variable.
