1917 (Nov 27) illustrated double-rate advertising cover for WJ Deane & Son music publishers (including reference to a patriotic anthem), to the United States with 2d Roo only tied by Sydney machine cancel & '[flag]/STICK FOR/AUSTRALIA' propaganda label at lower-left, & 'NSW/T/50' h/s, 'US CHARGE/TO COLLECT 10 CENTS' h/s & unusually with Parcel Post Postage Due 5c x2 affixed, a couple of minor blemishes. Unusual & striking. Ex Ray Kelly: acquired for $1687 at our auction of 2/9/2006. [In -/1/1913, the US Post Office introduced Postage Due stamps specifically for use on parcels. From 1/7/1913, these stamps were authorised for use on all classes of mail]

1941 (Sep 9) cover to England via the "Horseshoe Route" with QM 1d green Ash Imprint pair, 4d Koala & 1/- Lyrebird tied by Melbourne cds, red/white '3 Opened by Censor' label tied by diamond ' 3 /PASSED/BY/CENSOR/196' h/s in violet, Red Cross 'VICTORY' label at lower-left, central fold. [Italy's entry into the War on 10/6/1940 caused the air route between Cairo & London to be suspended. The famous "Horshoe Route" - Cairo-Durban then to GB by sea - was instituted immediately.
