THOMAS HAM PRINTINGS: Original State of the Dies (Virtually No Colour above 'VICTORIA') 1d orange-brown SG 1a, margins close to large except at upper-right where a little cut-into, ironed-out vertical crease at right, Butterfly '15' of Geelong, Cat 2250. A rare stamp.

THOMAS HAM PRINTINGS: Original State of the Dies (Fine Border & Fine Background) 2d as SG 2 but in a deep rich red-lilac shade, margins just touching to large, light Butterfly '19' cancel (rated RR) of The Leigh, Cat 1000+. An extraordinary shade, quite unlike any other Original State 2d we have seen. One of the gems of the collection.

Absent from Gary Diffen's collection. John Barwis had an example described as "lilac-rose", stated to be a discovery by JRW Purves, of which only six examples have been recorded. Based on comparison with the Barwis catalogue, this stamp does not appear to be the same shade, and it certainly does not conform to the descriptor "lilac-rose". The Barwis stamp sold for 2880.

CAMPBELL & CO: 1d rose on Campbell's "better quality paper" SG 23a, margins good to large, neat Barred Oval '1' cancel of Melbourne, Cat 750. An extremely rare stamp showing the distinctive brownish rose shade of this printing. RPSofV Certificate (2017).

Geoff Kellow at page 51 states "...The rose shade is often misidentified...There are probably only about two dozen copies of this shade recorded". In fact, most examples offered for sale are not the right colour. For many years this particular stamp has been the comparator against which all examples submitted to the RPSofV for expertising were assessed. Gary Diffen's superb example sold for 1800.
