1913 (Sep 2) local cover with Victoria 3d ochre & Kangaroos 1d red Die II tied by 'REGISTERED/ 1 /MELBOURNE' cds, red/white GPO registration label, boxed 'NOT KNOWN/.../CAMBERWELL' & redirected to Canterbury where endorsed on the flap "Not known...", forwarded to the Dead Letter Office (b/s in red). Returned to the sender in the accompanying Melbourne DLO 'RETURNED REGISTERED LETTER' Envelope with printed red lines, a couple of minor tonespots. [A similar Victoria/Kangaroo registered cover only sold for $1380 at our auction of 1/9/2007]

[The ACSC prices a Die I-II pair perf 'OS' on cover at $750]

1907 (Aug 26) usage of South Australian Post & Telegraph Department OHMS cover to England with superb 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE/ADELAIDE' cds in rosine & Thin 'POSTAGE' 4d Perf 12 perf 'OS' - paying the double-rate - affixed & tied by Adelaide cds, 'HONITON' arrival b/s. A most unusual usage. [The printer's imprint shows 20,000 envelopes were printed on 13/7/1907. The ACSC prices the normal 4d on cover at $300. However, perf 'OS' frankings (which are not priced on cover) are much scarcer than the normal stamps]

1941 (Dec 12) National Bank cover to Hong Kong with 'SHIPPING DOCUMENTS ONLY' h/s & '2d' on 2d tied by Sydney slogan cancel, 'OPENED BY CENSOR/ .. ' label tied by 'PASSED BY CENSOR/S.63' h/s in violet, 'RETURN TO/SENDER' "fickle finger" h/s & DLO cds of 20FE42 both in red. [d war tax was introduced 10/12/1941 so this is a very early usage. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour 7/12/1941 after which mail to threatened areas was not forwarded. Again, this is a very early example, before the introduction of 'SERVICE SUSPENDED' handstamps]

An extraordinary destination cover! [Argentine naval ships are usually named after national heroes. Domingo Faustino Sarmiento was President of the Republic of Argentina from 1868 until 1874]

Ex Guy Linfield: acquired for $1760 at a Sydney auction in 2006. An oustanding destination item, greatly enhanced by the State/CofA combination franking.

1934 (Apr 5) cover to "Wau/New Guinea" with KGV 2d pair tied by 'AIR MAIL/1 1/SYDNEY NSW' cds, endorsed "Left Territory" in red & with good strike of the rare boxed 'UNCLAIMED/AT RABAUL' h/s, Sydney DLO re-sealing label on the flap & h/s in magenta on the face. A terrific cover: acquired for $1035 at our auction of 11/7/2008. [In 1932 an airmail service was established between Port Moresby & Salamaua connecting with the goldfields of Bulolo & Wau. The rate from Australia was 2d surface to Port Moresby + 2d airmail fee on the Port Moresby-Salamaua route. The airmail fee was reduced to 1d in 1933 so this item is overpaid d: see Breckon (Oct 1988 at page 50]
