C of A - Postal History
Express Delivery covers to GB (1937 & 1951), Greece (1953), New Zealand (1937), Switzerland (1947) & USA (1933), various labels &/or instructional handstamps, a few problems. A very scarce group.
1937 commercial express cover to Melbourne with Small Kooka 6d tied by 'BIRCHIP/VIC-AUST' cds, entire black/green 'URGENT LETTERS/FOR IMMEDIATE DELIVERY/BY/TELEGRAPH MESSENGER' label affixed at the left, minor faults. [From 1901, the express fee inclusive of postage was 6d. Richard Breckon states that in 1935 a more complex fee structure was introduced, under which this cover should have been rated 9d. Sold at the Prestige auction of 15.5.2004 for $362]
1950s parcel piece with rare franking of Robes Thin Paper 10/- (Cat $2000 on cover; + 2d 6d & 1/-) tied by poor Sydney cds, to Cooma with 'EXPRESS' label, the address label a bit stained.
EXPRESS DELIVERY: 1929-65 mostly internal covers with various "Express" endorsements &/or handstamps & at various rates, noted 1931 Adelaide-Perth by air, 1948 Sydney-Hobart by air, 1950 Sydney suburban with 'NOT IN ATTENDANCE/DELIVER ORD MAIL' & 'EXPRESS DELIVERY SERVICE/EXPIRED. NORMAL DELIVERY' handstamps, 1951 Hobart-Sydney by air, 1955 parcel tag Melbourne-Ballarat, 1957 & 1965 by air to GB, etc, condition variable. The basis for a challenging new interest.
EXPRESS DELIVERY: EXPRESS DELIVERY: Decimal period covers with various 'SPECIAL/DELIVERY', 'MESSENGER/DELIVERY', 'OVERSEAS/EXPRESS/ DELIVERY' & 'Express Courier' labels, some regular-size items but many are large to very large envelopes, hence the low estimate for what is quite scarce material.

Asian covers including bundle of Hong Kong 1980s commercial airmails to Australia with range of commemoratives & definitives including higher values on registered & express mail, plus batch of Malaya, also some Japan, India, Nepal, South Korea, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, etc, a few PPCs and postal stationery items, condition variable but generally fine. Weighs 3kg.
Commercial mail accumulation noted lots of Germany including Third Reich official mail, post-WWII Allied Occupation French Zone registered covers, then quantity of 1970s+ family correspondence with variety of frankings, Worldwide including postcards many airmail to Australia, also Australia 1970s+ bundle including Priority Paid, Certified Mail, Security Post, etc, condition generally fine. Weighs 4kg.
1989 express airmail to Australia with 'SPEEDPOST/HONG KONG POST OFFICE' label and QEII $5 $10 & $50 tied by 'KINGS ROAD HONG KONG/26AP/89' cds, inspected with 'CUSTOMS/SCREENER' handstamp on the face and 'RECEIVED/28APR1989/SPECIAL SERVICES/PERTH WA' time-clock arrival b/s in red.

1939 & 1940 registered airmail covers Zurich to NSW 1) at 17fr60c rate including express fee with 2fr Air + 5fr & 10fr Mi #330v (not previously seen by us on cover), 'via Basel' h/s & scarce 'EXPRESS/13JUL1939/SYDNEY' clock b/s in violet; and 2) at 5fr70c rate with 35c pair & 5fr, Brindisi transit b/s & 'CLOSED' h/s presumably applied on arrival; central folds. A very desirable pair.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA - Postal History
1873 Prinsep cover endorsed "Immediate" to Dardanup with 2d chrome-yellow just tied by a Void Grid cancel and largely very fine strike of the undated oval 'POST OFFICE QUINDALUP/("3.9.73")/WA' h/s alongside, 'VASSE' transit cds on the face & fair Perth Maltese Cross b/s, small repair at the top. NB: Pope & Reynolds record no covers with the 12-bar '24' allocated to Quindalup. They also don't record a Void Grid allocated there.
1906 cover endorsed "Very Urgent" to Nangeenan with 1d pair tied by very fine strike of the scarce undated rubber double-circle 'POST OFFICE/---/NANGEENAN' handstamp in violet, on arrival readdressed to 'COTTESLOE' (arrival b/s).
