1913 double-rate cover to France with First Wmk 2d & 3d both with 'J&/BS' perfins of J & B Sniders tied by Melbourne machine cancel, minor blemishes.
1924 commercial usage to France of 'FOURPENCE/HALFPENNY' on 5d Registration Envelope with 1½d green tied by light 'HAY ST EAST PERTH' cds, large provisional registration label with 'HAYSTEAST' (no spaces) h/s.
1860 printed cover to Switzerland with 3-issue franking of Emblems Rouletted Vertically Laid Paper 2d, Beaded Ovals 4d & Shilling Octagonal pair (faulty) tied by BN '7' of 'CRESWICK' (cancelling one stamp & fine b/s), 19mm 'REGISTERED/MELBOURNE' transit cds in red on the face, rated "1/-" in red for the postage to be credited between France & Switzerland, numerous transits including French boxed 'POIDS - CACHETS' b/s. Ex Max Watson.

MORE TO PAY: '("2/6)/MORE TO PAY'-in-Oval very fine strike on 1871 (Oct 6) stampless cover from 'BRUNECK' (Austrian-type "thimble" cds) endorsed "Via Brindisi" with transit backstamps of 'VILLACH/8/10' & 'TRIEST/9/10/71' but then sent west overland to France with 'LYON/12/OCT/71', 'LYON A MARSEILLE/ 13/OCT/71' & 'MARSEILLE' b/s, superb strike of the unusual septagonal(!) Anglo-French Postal Convention 'FR./2f96c' postage payable h/s, Melbourne transit & Bairnsdale arrival backstamps, minor defects. An extraordinary cover, there being only one other inwards item recorded bearing any of the Anglo-French handstamps.Bruneck is a medieval town in the Southern Tyrol. It is today the Italian town of Brunico, but 80% of the population still speak German! The routing via France suggests that the cover was mis-directed from Trieste, adding as much as a week to the transit time.
POST TOWN NOT KNOWN: boxed 'POST TOWN/NOT/KNOWN IN VICTORIA' on 1887 cover from India to "Besancon/Australia" with faint 'POST TOWN/NOT KNOWN IN/NSW' h/s in purple (Sydney b/s), forwarded without endorsement to Melbourne (b/s) where endorsed "Try South Australia", Adelaide b/s & now "Try France", 'VINCENNES A MACON' TPO cds & 'BESANCON' arrival b/s, stained (mostly on the reverse).
PENRHYN: 1910 commercial cover to France with Overprints 2½d pair (underpaid ½d) & large registration label with "PENRHYN/ISLAND" in rosine, 'U.S. SEA POST/REG' transit b/s in blue.
Album with a few pre-stamp items, then with Republic or Empire Imperf (mostly solo) frankings, many with fine to very fine stamps & no less than 11 with 80c carmine (Cat €195+ each), a good range of postmarks with many numerals, also stars, instructional handstamp etc noted 20c black, condition variable but generally attractive. - the continuation album with an array of mostly perforated Classics with some better stamps including 1870-71 Bordeaux Imperfs 10c & 20c x3 (one endorsed "Paris par Moulins alier" = zinc cylinder), Ballon Monté two different unused lettersheets & an envelope to London with 30c), 1865 registered to London with very fine 'FRANCE/[crown]/REGISTERED' arrival h/s in red, 1865 'ALEXANDRIE/ EGYPTE' to GB, 1872 registered to Italy with 25c pair & 80c, etc, plus a few later items, multiple frankings & a variety of postmarks including numerals, condition variable but generally attractive. 1688 entire letter from Marseilles to Livorno (Leghorn, Italy), manuscript "pd" & "stirrups" sign on the reverse, a bit stained (not surprising as it is nearly 320 years old).
POSTMARKS: Attractive mostly 19th Century collection on leaves with lots of Imperfs & other better stamps to 5fr cancelled with a wide variety of types including rollers, large and small numerals & Numerals-in-Stars, Letters-in-Diamonds including 'CEMG' (Corps Expeditionaire de Mexique), newspaper, railway & ship-board types, trial types including one that actually put a hole in the stamp!, covers with 'BM'-in-oval & 'F./2'-in-Circle, France Used Abroad group including 'SALONIQUE/ TURQUIE' on 1881 outer & 'ESTRANGER/BARCELONA' (Cat €475), superb hexagonal 'SOUTHAMPTON/FRANCE/MB' on 1883 cover, etc etc. Ex Holbeach.
